Topaz Video 1.7.1

Another update that hard locked my system as soon as I tried to upscale anything to 8K. The last update also refused to upscale anything to 8K no matter what model or source, but at least it didn’t lock up my system and force a hard reboot. Drivers are always up to date. The only stable version where I can use all models with no issues is 1.0.4. Can’t get logs because I have to hard reset and reinstall ver 1.0.4 before reopening the program, or it’ll be an infinite hard lock/reboot situation. There are some new features I’d like to test in the newer versions, but I’ll always take reliability over a new feature.

not woking properly here

It looks better because there are more pixels available to reconstruct Objects what the model was trained on. Soft, feathered gradient transition, with SLM you reach the point fast where scaling up further doesn’t really add anything anymore and SLP this also happens but this point is much higher. SLP creates more “hard” structures, which gives you more contrast and leaves more room to make more gradients transitions when scaling to a higher resolution. What I’m trying to say is that it also depends heavily on the source how much it benefits scale it more up.

No need to guess if the new version produces darker videos. Just use my portable Video Compare tool to very easily perform direct comparisons

Final Cut Pro plugins always appear as absent when you put them on a timeline.

Logs show the app is not registering a valid connection for authentication or to download the model correctly. That is causing your issue.

Noted and sent to the devs for review.

If you have not cleared that installation off, can you manually see if you can find the logs along this file path and send to the team for review? help@topazlabs.com

I have downloaded the latest VC_redist.x64.exe from Microsoft, and then it worked. In the future, it would be helpful if all the necessary DLLs were included, or at least if a message appeared indicating which DLL is missing! … Without a detailed description of the error, it’s difficult to find the cause.

Question about SLP sharpness. The desktop app has three levels on its slider, while SLP in the web app has five.

Are 1, 2 and 3 on the web and desktop apps the same? If not, That’s going to make it hard to mix local and cloud processed clips.

Can you grab the logs and send to the support team at help@topazlabs.com for the devs to review?

First of all, SLP overall is pretty great. It’s producing some of the best looking reconstructions of a 480p source that I’ve ever seen. For the first time I feel like the output is a film source downscale instead of a dvd source upscale with most of the results I’m seeing.

That said, I’ve got a couple of pretty impactful issues with SLP 2.6.

1 - Ghosting (on scene changes especially) continues to be a huge problem. I’m having to use ffmpeg scene detection to split up my files by scene as a workaround. Not as common is background elements ghosting through moving objects in the same scene, usually when there’s a large luma difference like a bright wall panel light in the background. I haven’t found a workaround for the in-scene ghosting.

2 - Bright spot hallucinations. There’s small brights dots that show up now and again and fade in and out across 7 frames (it’s always 7 frames) where the 4th frame is the brightest. They look like film hotspots but when looking at the source I don’t see anything even remotely resembling a bright dot in the area that it happens. These mostly happen in black areas, and especially if there’s camera shake.

3 - Static background walls can develop a blocky very low resolution look that looks worse than the source. Lack of texture seems to make this worse. It applify minimal banding as well.

I’ll work on getting some example images uploaded.

Now that the adobe acquisition has been completed, I hope to see HUGE investment in the models in the coming months. Starlight Precise 3.0 anyone?

I would love to see to a good amount of speed improvement with Starlight models before any more output quality improvements. If these models could average 2 to 2.6 FPS with good hardware they would be a lot more usable .2 to .4 FPS it just way to slow to upscale any video longer than 30 seconds. My computer specs 7900x 32gb 5200mhz DDR5 5080 I am not gonna wait 2 1/2 to 4 days just upscale a 20min video with these models.
