I was going to write some impressions after using 3.1.0 for many images. 3…1.2 is even better.
Even with 3.1.0, I now enjoy using TPAI again, for the first time since 2.3.2. Since the 2.4.0 debacle and all the attempts to fix it, I was just using it to test it and it would be fixed. Now, it’s good again!3.1.0 fixed Preserve Text, and other things, but 3.1.2 fixes the remaining bugs that were affecting my usage. It now takes settings into account in Suggestions. It now works properly as a plug-in for On1 Photo Raw. I am enjoying this version and getting good results from it.
It is almost time to move on to improvements, though I would urge you to first fix any bugs before moving forward. I have encountered only one minor bug in 3.1.2. When used as a plug-in, it pops up a message saying that you are now on Topaz, and to save or exit Topaz to go back to PhotoShop. However, I use On1. If nothing is detected to show what software is referring an image to TPAI, it should say, “to return to your other photo software” or something to that effect. It did correctly handle the image otherwise. Others have reported some issues, and these should be addressed first. After that…
The improvements that would be nice to see:
Highest priority after bugs – This is such a glaring omission that it is almost a bug. The Quality control for remove should be a setting, rather then permanently defaulted to mediocre. With a fast computer, I NEVER want to use anything other than the highest quality setting. So often, I waste time removing something, only to then realize it could have been done better.
In Adjust Lighting, it should either Brightness, Contrast, and Gamma; or Black, Shadow, Mid, Highlight, and White adjustments which can be changed from whatever auto determination is made. In settings, ask whether or not a user wants Auto to even be attempted, or just open the controls.
In Balance Color, it has a temperature control, but would also need a red-green to be manual; or it could have levels for all three primary colors. Again, whether or not to attempt Auto should be a setting.
(Note: In earlier discussions, some have questioned the need for Light and Color. However, since noise reduction works best on Raw files, TPAI will normally be the first processing that many images get. It is not unusual to find the results are great, but just a bit to light, dark, red, green, contrasty, or washed-out, etc. If these easy things could be fixed, one would not need to work on the same image in multiple pieces of software.)
For Remove, it would be nice to set how much it should create vs how much it should just duplicate its background.
It would be great to have the AI-generated recovery and Low-Res-2 modes from Gigapixel.
It’s great to see Topaz back on track again with this product! I was worried about your future.
I stuck with 2.3.2 also because of the massive number of bugs and regressions in all versions after 2.3.2. Finally I updated to 3.1.0 and now 3.1.2 because after months and months it is finally getting into reasonable shape. Still lots to do and improvements to be made, but at least it feels like it is in better condition now.
v3.1.2, OS X Ventura 13.6.7, iMac 27" 2019 with Radeon Pro 580X 8 GB, when I choose Remove from Enhancements, at the end of “Preparation”, the GPU usage remains at 74% to 80% indefinitely, without me doing anything, not even selecting the area to remove. If I try to select the area to remove, the mouse pointer moves jerkily, making the operation very difficult. When I confirm the removal of a small object, the operation is unacceptably slow.
If TPAI will go out and take pictures for me, process them, sell them and put the money in my account it will still not be enough to make up for the stupid floating panel…
After updating to 3.1.2 PAI freezes on start with a white screen and becomes unresponsive. I tried repairing it with the installer, resetting my PC between changes, removing it entirely and then reinstalling, but unfortunately it’s the same issue whatever I do. I’ll try rolling back to the last version for now.
Hello,
I don’t know if this bug has already been reported but I’m going to say it because it’s quite important.
So if you import a batch of images that will have the same filters and you apply them to one image and then make a current setting for the whole batch and then export the batch, only the first image will be processed. The other images in the batch will not be processed. For the other images in the batch to be processed, each imported image must be analyzed. Only then can I export and all images will be processed. It’s a real waste of time. In the case where I encountered the problem, I only had 12 images. But the result would have been the same if I’d had 20 or 40 or more to do. So it would be nice if all the images in the batch could be processed without having to do the analysis on each image by clicking on the preview of each image. This would save a lot of time.
I had the same issue on a previous release. Support knew about it and said that this happens if Autopilot is turned off in Preferences. Turning it on fixed it but with v3.1.2 I no longer have the issue. (Windows 11 PC).
Is there a reason why photos shot in “portrait” orientation (maybe that one has a better expression, sorry if that’s the case) shows up as rotated in the film strip?
They do show ok in the main view and also come out right after applying most enhancements (I say most), but:
If I rotate and crop any photo showing up rotated (portrait orientation) in the film strip, this:
I’m having the same problem. In fact, I literally just installed Photo AI (went back to v 3.1.0) and launched it. I then closed it, and relaunched it. I see a thin frame, a white title window with (Not Responding) in it, and it is completely unresponsive. It is taking up 3-5% of CPU time, but doing nothing.
This is after a simple reinstall, launching, closing, and relaunching. Weird. I think I will go back to 3.0 like you did.
V3.1.2 - Having rolled back to 3.1.0 as 3.1.1 froze on the opening page, I’m now presented with an unresponsive update-to-3.1.2 window. Nothing on this is clickable. Staying on 3.1.0 for now. I’ve said it before, but are we users your beta testers? Windows 11 on a recent AMD laptop.
The ‘waves’ you circled were already present as posterized areas in the original low rez artifact-laden JPEG. Upscaling just sharpened them and made them more visible.
hoo, i certainly missed this in the changelogs (i’m mainly offline… and the changelog is not available when offline), thanks for the info ! i’ll redirect the shorcut to one of my mouse button lol
I said before too, yes we are the beta testers for Topaz. In fact, very few companies does that. Lets see Topaz do public beta testers for shopping cart, we will get lots of freebies merchandise.
