Topaz Video AI v3.1.6

Thanks! I’ll experiment.

And what do you think. To convert HD video to 4k, would the Artemis Highte model be better, or Theia? DVD on 4K?

120 fps is pointless, the human eye can’t distinguish anything much higher than 60.

On a monitor that can handle it they can.
If it wasn’t possible to see a difference then Ang Lee wouldn’t have shot Billy Lynn… and Gemini Man at 120 fps - he could have saved money and shot them at 60 fps.
Gamers also wouldn’t use 144 Hz monitors and would stick to 60 Hz max if there was no difference.
They’d also not build 120 Hz TVs/monitors if there was no difference compared to 60 Hz.

Just press preview for both options and see which you prefer for those videos so you can see a short section with each.
I think Artemis or Gaia often look good.
It would be good if there was an option in Video AI so could see them side by side like or 3 on screen at once + the original like with Video Enhance AI.

David, the human eye, in general, likes to watch videos on a mobile phone. On edge, AVI 1.45Gb. But I probably don’t belong to the human breed… 120 fps I do for the future. I’ll buy a 120Hz TV. I’ll convert the LOST series, and I’ll enjoy…

There is no point in the option of viewing different models at the same time. Imagine how many different scenes in the series LOST! Movement, panorama, common scenes, close-up, day, night…
I did a 3 minute mix of scenes, and watched 20-30-40 times. Compared the quality of the video. the general impression is that Proteus is smoothing out the sharpness of the image. He made freeze frames (photos) of various models. The most clear image was given by the Artemis model. And Theia seemed the best in the panorama as the camera moved. Therefore, I appeal to those who are specialists…

That’s up to you, but you will enjoy the series just as much at 60 fps, and I doubt you will notice any difference using 120.

You could also watch it with the motion smoothing option that’s on a lot of TVs (eg. judder reduction on new Samsung ones). It probably won’t be as good as Apollo/Chronos models (I assume Apollo is the most accurate) but it will allow you probably to turn it on/off/try different levels of it in real time.

I have such a feature now on TV Philips. I don’t watch the video without it. But Topaz does it better.

Brother, you are a minimalist! I hope that in the near future the 4K120 format will become the standard format, like the current 1080/24. Because 24x5=120, 30x4=120

Well, I finally decided to jump in because I am getting pretty frustrated. I have been using Video (Enhance) AI for a bit over a year now. My goal is mainly to “restore” old movies and upscale them to 1080p, if the resolution is lower. While using v2.6.x one of the issues was the constant crash of the app, sometimes towards the end of a movie. That was really frustrating, especially when that was happening after a few days of processing and losing it all. To avoid that, after I discovered the option in preferences, I started using the number of frames instead of SMPTE timecodes. This way I was splitting the movie in 20000 frames and join them after that with MKVToolnix.
With the arrival of v3 the processing speed got drastically better, double than v2.6. But now I am running into this other issue constantly, the “Out of memory” error. This seems to happen mainly on one machine (configuration below), no matter what version I am using. I use only the presets “Protheus Manual” or “Artemis Denoise-Sharpen”, mainly no upscaling so far. I tried changing the memory percentage in the preferences anywhere between 75-100%, still happening. The problem is definitely not the computer memory because there is always plenty available when the crashes happen.

Configuration
MacPro 5,1 12-core, 64GB RAM, RX 580 8GB
MacOS Catalina 10.15.7

I have 2 other machines that do processing also and these crashes don’t happen almost at all.
MacPro 3,1 8-core, 32GB RAM, RX 580 8GB
MacOS Catalina 10.15.7

I tried updating the OS to Big Sur and Monterey with OCLP but the processing speed is 20-30 times slower (0.90spf vs 26spf). So I have to stick to Catalina.

My 2 questions:

  1. Any one of you has any advice or opinions why this “Out of memory” crash is happening? I read most of the post on this issue and I don’t remember seeing anything definitive.
  2. Would it be possible to re-implement the number of frames option? This way we won’t get as frustrated with these crashes.

I updated from an older v3 version to this one, but now I cannot log into the program. Topaz Labs Account - Topaz Labs is not responsive at all atm. The new way of logging in does not seem reliable. I paid for a product that I cannot access.

Logging in works fine for me from Chrome on Windows, Android or ipad OS.

Topaz Labs Account - Topaz Labs, loads correctly for you? I got the page to load on my android phone, but when I try to open it from chrome or firefox on my windows 11 laptop it doesn’t load (same with website the login button takes you to) - preventing me from logging in. I’ve tried disabling and tweaking my vpn, but that didn’t do anything.
Ok finally, I tried connecting from chrome on my windows 10 pc and it worked. I guess it’s too early to say, but the version of windows is an odd potential cause. At least I can use it on my pc, but not having it on my laptop is not great.

Windows 11 isn’t a cause as I use win 11 on my laptops. I wonder if there is something with your VPN causing issues?

I eventually got it working. I tried so many things at once that I’m not even sure what it was. Followed some random tutorials on youtube, but it might have just been my vpn. I’ll try to replicate the issue and come back to this.

It looks like a problem with your system not with Topaz. Fix your explorer.

I wish it were that simple! 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97, 30 and multiples thereof, PAL, NTSC, tearing, judder…

However, Gsync/Freesync monitors will mostly fix all that without having to go to 120 fps or Hz.

I to have a MacPro 7,1 and I am getting “out of memory” errors where is there plenty of RAM available.
To reduce the problem when doing batch conversions of say 17 videos, I have reduced the number of parallel processes from 4 to 2 or 1.
I am on Ventura 13.1 using TVAI 3.1.4.
Not upgraded to 13.2.1 because of fatal crashes on Intel Macs using 3.1.4, just confirmed here now 3.1.6.
Contact Topaz support directly and they will likely ask for TVAI log files - it may help going forward.
(I did give them my logs a few weeks back to try to address this problem)

Interesting to see the size of the video frame is not the issue here. My “out of memory” errors occurred on 6k 360º prores videos which are massive in file size. Could still be the size of the file? A cumulative problem hitting a crash threshold perhaps.
