Topaz Video AI v3.1.5

Great job for new version. I can see significant quality improvements for my home videos

I want to throw in some ideas for potential future features:

  • Compare Previews in a side-by-side manor: It would be nice to compare the results in one single view side by side to see the differences. Switching Previews from the list takes a few seconds and is not that useful, when comparing results.

  • Output Video compression: For some reason the output video is quite big in my case (mp4 h264 high). Maybe you could implement a compressing feature to compress the output video for better storage size and web transfer.
EDIT: Just saw, its already on the Roadmap. Great! Sorry.

  • I long whished feature from myself is an instant Frame-Preview of the current settings: If everytime I change some values I need to start preview calculations, it would take for ages to get the best result for the scene. It would be nice to click a button to preview the current frame based on the settings without rendering a whole sequence of frames. (I know this isnt possible technically yet, but it would be a very nice feature)

Again: You did a very good job in this things. I am very happy and recommend this software masterpiece to everybody, who is interested in this topic

Kind regards,
Launemax

The frame increase engine is still blurry.
The Themis engine gives excellent results for some materials.
The Themis engine works well with the stabilization engine.
However, do not use it with the Proteus Engine.
I have great expectations for future developments.

mage Sequence Import crashes Video AI 3.1.5

The moment i try to import a sequence the programs crashes
what can i do?I want to save time by not making a quicktime out of the renders-PNGs first.

The PNGs have alpha, could that be a problem?

Me to, but i managed to save the prores.

Indeed - I also had this problem. The final file appeared to be still writing out but the green tick was there.

Oh
and if anyone reads this, a pause function would be appreciated

It’s still failing for me when I try to preview with Chronos Fast (fails to download the model). Also fails with Apollo.
It’s previewed with Gaia okay (it downloaded it okay - one of the files anyway) and it’s downloaded what I think are model files starting with prob-v3 (proteus?).

Are Chronos and maybe Apollo files a lot bigger than files for Gaia? Could that be the reason it fails to download them? It spends ages in the “downloading mod
” section but doesn’t give any informative info on how much it’s downloaded (just shows the 3 dots after “downloading mod” moving). I have 12 Mbps download speed so they should be downloading reasonably fast.

Is there any alternative servers I can just download them all from so it all works?

I’m assuming Chronos etc. are currently failing due to timeouts due to it taking so long to try to download it (with maybe a lot of other people trying at the same time).

Why does setting the output to 7680x4320 (4x upscale of 1080p) with export encoder set as H264 high (nvidia) (the only h264 option that it shows)
say "Error: For current encoder the output width should be in the range 145 to 4096 and height between 145 and 4096)?

Mp4 itself does allow 7680x4320. If there’s some limit with an nvidia hardware encoder then surely they should also have a software option that encodes to 7680x4320 as an h264 mp4.
eg. wikipedia shows level 6 of H264 and above all allowing 7680x4320 or higher

Video Enhance AI allowed 7680x4320 with “Mp4 - H264” (it didn’t show “nvidia” next to it) even though it gave a warning saying “outputs larger than 4K may not work with mp4” so why does Video AI have a lower limit? It’s supposed to be better than Video Enhance AI so surely it should be less limited in terms of resolution (including with mp4/h264) not more limited, especially since one of the things the app is promoted for is upscaling.

Talking in this same forum with people who know about the matter
in fact they helped me to implement UT Video in jason, it seems that the CRF thing is not possible.

I know this maybe obvious but Windows firewall is notorious for blocking programs and their hidden components, you could disable the rat bastard and see if that fixes the model downloads

Disable Windows Firewall so that every virus on the internet can get through or any hacker?
I’ve got an antivirus too (which hasn’t given any notification of any issue with Topaz) which should help prevent viruses but it won’t stop things the Windows Firewall will stop properly.

Though if it was the windows firewall stopping it downloading the Chronos models and the Apollo model I don’t see why I’ve been able to preview/download one of the gaia model files and 10 of the prob-v3 (probably model) files (surely it would stop me downloading all the models not allow some).

Also if it was something my side (such as the Windows Firewall) stopping the model of chronos being downloaded why does it say “Downloading Mod
” (with the 3 dots moving) for about ages (eg. 20 or 30 mins - I haven’t timed it though)? If it was something my side preventing it being downloaded wouldn’t it fail almost immediately after trying to download? Doesn’t the 3 dots continously moving suggest it’s downloading some bytes of it (then eventually failing eg. due to some timeout)?

Can Topaz please give a URL where the model files can be downloaded manually?

It was only a suggestion, as the same thing happened to me.

Thanks. It happened to you with this version of Topaz Video AI and the Windows 10 Pro firewall (or was it something in the past that Windows Firewall affected?)? Maybe the same firewall is on Windows 10 and Win 10 Pro.

It just seems too risky to connect to the internet without a firewall since like I said it could open it to hackers etc.

The previous versions of Topaz Video AI and Video Enhance AI and Photo AI/Gigapixel and Mask AI and the other Topaz software didn’t have this issue with downloading the models.

Maybe I can ask for a URL to the previous version of Topaz Video AI and reinstall that instead if the I can’t get this version working with the models (but that’s not going to have the quality updates this version has). Maybe the next version of this won’t have this issue, hopefully.

edit: Also if it’s the Windows (10) Firewall causing the issue why isn’t the same thing happening to every Topaz Video AI user with this version and Windows 10/Win 10 Pro? Or could it be just happening with win 10 Pro users and there’s less of them so a lot of people don’t get the error?

I agree, a URL to the models would be a truly magnificent thing, as it was in the beginning, as you always run the risk of downloads not working due to file/server issues.

But yeah, the model issue can be brought up with the next beta, which they should be releasing shortly, as the beta thread’s pretty much done for this past beta, assuming you joined up as a beta tester.

Thanks. I’m not a beta tester currently but I mentioned it to a support person about this (that if things were changed on beta that maybe I could use that). eg. I’d mentioned it giving more info on the downloads eg. in the logs/on screen but if this issue could be fixed the beta then that would help a lot.

I’ll definitely bring it up then!

FYI The next beta is out, you can upload the logs there as the DEVs will be focusing on that forum right now.

Whether 8k encoding is supported or not depends on the encoder, what you’re talking about are two completely different encoders, it’s not something Topaz makes. As for why there is no x264 encoder, you can check the content in front of this post Topaz Video AI v3.1.5 - #92 by david.123, which is very clear.

NVENC - Hardware-Accelerated Video Encoding Supported Format Details

Okay so that’s showing max res 4096x4096 for the hardware accelerated H264. So was it x264 that was in Video Enhance AI that allowed 8K (even if it gave a warning message about the higher res)? It didn’t say x264 it just said “MP4 - H.264”. And that’s now been removed due to licensing?

Why can’t we have a normal H264 (not necessarily x264) in Video AI to allow for bigger file sizes (such as 8K), in addition to the hardware H264 (nvidia)? There must be some normal (eg. software) H264 they can use/license.

For quality ProRes could be output instead (but very high bitrate) and HEVC could be used but HEVC as far as I know has much worse licensing for users (eg. you have to give a percentage of your profits or something). Maybe VP9 can be used instead but I think that will be slower etc and I think I’ve had quality issues with that in the past.

Don’t try to use H264 to encode videos above 4K, because it will not be supported by graphics card manufacturers, which means that a large number of devices cannot play smoothly. You should choose other encoding standards such as H265 or AV1.
