Topaz Video AI 6.1.2 + 6.1.3

That’s why my to-go recipe is:

  1. Proteus with auto settings, all sliders are zero.
  2. Rhea with the same.
  3. Start Premiere Pro, Proteus as the base layer, Rhea as the second layer with the opacity of 45…50%.

It delivers crispiness of Rhea without Rhea’s over sharpened artefacts. Sometimes Rhea tires too hard on the fine details like branches of the trees and it looks unnaturally sharp.
Rhea’s faces are too plasticky.
So, I blend Rhea’s fine details over Proteus’ mushy background and the result is much better than any model alone. I tried many times to adjust settings of Rhea and Proteus to create a better result - nope, overlaying Rhea over Proteus yields the best I can achieve.
And if the input is very bad - like old over-compressed videos, I use Iris over Proteus.
If the input is beyond salvageable (like 360p videos from Youtube) - I add film noise using Filmconvert Nitrate beforehand.

yes two layering is exactly what I do already with variable opacity pending on footage. I often use Iris with increased deblur levler or Proteus just in auto mode, and as the base layer Rhea. Sometimes I use addintional a finisher on merged one with “Artemis Medium Halo”+ “Artemis HQ12”, or sometime only Artemis HQ

1 x Rhea as first step was recommended from someone, then upscale with Proteus, I have to test this also.

My experience with Proteus 3 is that it makes monster faces and painting-like results if you don’t denoise the source beforehand. If it is denoised, I can turn off the Reduce Noise setting and get good results.

Proteus 4 cleans out noise pretty well on most sources, but it does it with the Fix Compression setting. I have to make sure the Reduce Noise setting is at 0 or -100 to get the best results form Proteus 4. I think it’s a little better at keeping fine detail than the denoise plus Proteus 3 combination.

I got to try this combo.

I wonder if GPU deinterlacing settings in driver’s video settings would suffice? Given mpv uses hardware video decoding during TVAI’s work, of course.

For drag&drop, make sure your file manager has the same ‘rights’ as TVAI (admin-amin or user-user, I didn’t try admin-user yet).

Are you saying it is working for you on this version?

I installed this version the same way I installed the other versions.

Drag and drop worked in 3, 4, and 5, didnt work in 6…and is now working in 5 again, now that I have reinstalled it.

I may try again if they fix preview playback, but I don’t want a version with broken preview playback, even if I could track down and fix drag and drop.

It works, as ever - I usually have Total Commander as admin running, and I launch TVAI and other Topaz apps the same way, then I just drag and drop the file into the program.

The devs are probably fixing stuff around previewing as we speak, since it’s a crucial functionality in TVAI.

Thats interesting, because there is much room to try different methods gives you denoise. Starting qtgmc deinterlacing as slower you did as more noise gets removed, so pending on footage you may then can use Proteus V3 instead V4 when source is pre-denoised, or it’s better fast deinterlacing with more noise and using Proteus V4 or you use differnet method to pre-denoise.

Disfiguring faces with the models has a lot to do with noise which is interpreted as part of faces. If the source material contains little noise, even RehaXL sometimes produces usable results.

You aren’t allowed by Windows to drag-n-drop files between user space and admin space.
Yet you can override it by disabling UAC, if you know what you’re doing.

Agreed, I only have UAC disabled with a ‘slider’ in ‘old’ Control Panel, I didn’t use the registry hack though, because it was breaking Metro/UWP apps back in the day.

100%, that would be amazing. Proteus v4 is good, but the artifacts it is creating make it completely useless for me. Also, it’s been, what, 2 version updates since a new Proteus model? Pretty sure the last one was in Topaz 4.something. I assume they’re working on a new Proteus model, though, so I’m excited.

Previous versions didn’t have the issue and I’m using the PC same as always.

They should make a Proteus and Starlight hybrid model and call it Prolight or Starteus.

“Prolight” sounds so cool!

I think this is a “PC” that is able to drive the starlight model.
