Topaz Photo AI v2.4.0

I have been working with the new version for a week or so. Today I just noticed something. With the old interface, I could turn “enhancements” on or off to compare before and after results. It looks like we have lost that option. Is that right? Now to compare, I have to “trash” an enhancement and add it back in to compare before and after. Am I missing something?

This update crashed the entire product. Now I can’t run the install, or the product. Rebooting my laptop didn’t help. This sure doesn’t look like an update to me.

Yes, I noticed a decline in the quality and usability of the remove tools results in the last few versions as well.

Yes, please read above… We’ve all been going on about it, and much more

I am not sure if it is last version or this one, but I had a picture where a bird wss sitting on a statue, against blue sky. When I tried to remove it, it got replaced with a completely different kind of bird!

On a second try, by zooming in more and being more careful about covering just the bird, it did the right thing and gave a beautiful result. You may want to try this.

Before 2.3.2 it had three choices for amount of “padding”, with little explanation about how to use them. One of those probably would have given the right result more easily.

Also, it should be possible to save the preference for always using maximum quality. Instead it always starts on medium-low quality, which I never want.

I agree. I’m in the same requirement boat as you.

Yes, this setting should reapear.

Maybe ist just not the right tool for this kind of retouch.

Lately I keep forgetting what the tools are for.

The user wants a tool that knows what the user wants, but there is no such thing.

It would be very helpful and beneficial for me if you could add a 2nd pass upscale option. I am quite satisfied with the upscaling using the following approach:

1.2x upscaling in Gigapixel AI version 6.3.3 using the low resolution model (gmp-v2-fp32-384x384-2x-ox.tz). I noticed from the log files that Gigapixel actually uses the 2x model for 1.2x upscaling, and at 0% denoise and 0% deblur it produces a satisfactory result. (Why 1.2x? Because it produces the least artifacts and has the least deviation for the next upscale (I would say) compared to using 2x, 4x, 6x modes).

IN A SECOND, 2nd pass I finally upscale in Photo AI to a predetermined fixed length of the longer edge of the image, most often using the standard v2 model. It seems to me that this combination fits perfectly (for images of lower and medium resolutions). Of course, for DSLRs and larger images, I would not recommend the low-res model in the first step.

So, this would be my biggest wish for one of the next versions: introduce an optional 2nd pass upscale, just like we have in Video AI. Thank you very much

Yes, me too.

And or sharpen after resize.

I dont want to sharpen the input but the output.

Denoise b4 resize makes sense but not sharpen b4 upscale.

Hi, I had the same problem ( 1. sharpen function doesn’t appear to work). I uninstalled Photo AI, delete its folders both in \Program Files and \ProgramData, restarted PC a installed it (2.4.0) again. Now it seems it is working fine. HTH

Photo AI 2.4.0 crashed immedeality after chosing “Adjust Lightning” on my M3 Mac using access via Capture One. Re-Installation did not help.
The new UI is not step forward compared to 2.32. To many clicks to adjust values and no possibilty to what I have adjust.

The problem is if one selects the preference for subject detection to be “none”, nothing will be sharpened. In the previous versions, the whole image would be sharpened.

You now have to set it to all rather than none, which I suppose is more logical. Unfortunately, it can’t be set in the preferences yet, but I assume it will be possible in the next version, hopefully coming this week.

Or just set it to the way it was in previous versions. That is, the whole image would be sharpened if “none” was selected in the preferences.

The new functionality in 2.4.0 which was released 11 days ago looks really good. We see lots of complaints about bugs and limitations of the new UI though. Even some of the youtube reviewers have commented on it. I expect that on Thursday this week there will be an update to 2.4.1 and it will address many of these things. I am very much looking forward to getting some of the rough edges smoothed out soon with this very interesting new functionality. Good luck to the Topaz team!

In preference Subject detection,
Default subject type. choose Subjects. that will slove the problem

I have subject selected in my preferences and always have. Others might prefer to have all.

Since others have reported issues with batch processing, I ran approx 200 ARW files through autopilot. After about ten minutes (approx 50 file processed) I was out of application memory and TPAI quit.
Since I don’t normally do batch processing in large numbers, I cannot say if this would occur with previous versions of the software.
