Topaz Photo AI 3.3.0 Sluggish

Just downloaded Topaz Photo AI 3.3.0. I have been using Topaz Photo AI for a while and I’m not sure the latest version is better. I use a mid 2017 27 inch iMac with 64 GB RAM and a SSD, Ventura 13.7. Boy, is the new version sluggish. It makes it really difficult to use. Are you moving the software to be only usable with the latest chips?

In particular, the sharpening tool. Can’t even select an object because the spinny wheel just sits there.

Disappointed so far.

To help troubleshoot this problem, I’d like for you to follow the directions below:

I will note that Intel CPU Mac devices are slightly underpowered for AI processing and will perform slower. We have some more information on our Topaz Labs Documentation page that I will link below for your review:

Topaz Photo AI | System Requirements

You can also try adjusting your AI Processor to run on your CPU. To do this, please open Topaz Photo AI, go to Preferences > General , and set the AI Processo r to CPU .

Many users with Intel MacOS machines have reported that Topaz Photo AI v3.0.4 or v2.4.2 is most suited for their needs and experiences, as well as better processing times and consistent edits and displays. I have included a link to that those previous version below if you would like to revert to this version for your machine:

  • Topaz Photo AI | v3.0.4

    • Released June 13th, 2024

      • The newer interface that all v3 have, but v3.0.4 does not have the new Autopilot updates.

      • It can sometimes work on underpowered machines; however, it will be slower than v2.4.2

  • Topaz Photo AI | v2.4.2

    • Released March 28th, 2024

      • The older interface will be the fastest version your computer can run

In response to RSPPilot:

I hate to say it, but your 2017 mac is now almost 7 years old—even with the giant ram. I have a almost 3 year old M1Pro, and except for Topaz it runs everything very fast, as does my wife’s intel 2018 macbookpro. But if she tries to run Topaz, it just bogs down. Except for the not-ready-for-prime-time Super focus my m1Pro still moves along fine.

There are too problems for you: a) you have no neural engine, and Topaz runs mostly on the neural engine on my mac, b). without the neural engine, the computational algorithms are so large that your intel processor just can’t keep up.

If you want to be able to run the latest AI software, you will need to upgrade your machine.

BTW, if you upgrade, DO NOT get just 16 gb RAM. Get at least 32gb or 36 GB or 48gb. I find that memory pressure often goes into the red with any task at all. Don’t believe the hype about memory. Its right for anything that does not require AI neural engine stuff.
