We will be working on a fix for the Object Selection brush in Remove so itâs no longer crashing. I know itâs the easiest way to do selection in Remove so itâs quite frustrating that it doesnât work right now.
Many thanks John do rectudcupdate and I will look forward to that.
Thanks

I have been seeing a few random crashes since updating to 3.0.1, with no single user action seemingly to blame. However, I can reliably recreate a crash when trying to use the Removal tool as detailed in steps below:
Steps to reproduce issue:
Topaz Photo AI [v3.0.1] on [Windows 11]
I am on windows 10 and I have the same issue,
for me it crash only when you use object selection, and do not crash with using the brush selection.
what I do is⌠I open an image, i remove all the enhancements, including the upscale, and then i use the removal object⌠i noticed that the larger the image, or the more the corrections, the more often the crash. I think itâs an out of memory issue. I have a RTX 2070 super with 8GB or ram-
Step 1) Start RemoveâŚ
Step 2) I changed power/quality to all the way up
Step 3) I changed to object selection
Step 4) I selected a person.
Tried in older version. Then it informed me of an upgrade when restarted. I upgraded to:
Topaz Photo AI 3.0.2 still same crash

I have exactly the same problem on Asus PC , running latest and up to date WIN10, the program crashes when I choose the "object selection " option in the "Object Selection " menu, the âregularâ option works fine
Steps to reproduce issue:
Topaz Photo AI [v1.x.x] on [Windows/Mac]
App closes suddenly when remove with object selection, no matter the image, nor the number of processing layers.
The only workaround is being very careful using the brush: slowly, clicking when the system responds.

Please follow the instructions below to perform a clean install to better troubleshoot why you had this problem with Topaz Photo AI:
Start by clearing any previous plist files that are on your computer for Topaz Photo AI by following the steps in the link below:
Topaz Photo AI | plist Files Mac
After you have done this, disable any antivirus, firewall, VPN, or proxy software that might be active on your computer. These tools are sometimes known to interfere with the installerâs ability to download the model files.
Please also ensure that the Topaz Photo AI installer has all the proper settings in your system by going to your Mac System Settings > Privacy & Security tab and scrolling down to the security section. You will want to make sure you have 'App Store and identified developers â selected. Here is a video example:
Example of Proper System Preferences
Finally, rerun the installer. You can download a new installer from the downloads page directly :
Let me know how that goes for you and Iâll keep an eye out for your reply.
Thanks John, but nothing change at all: repetitive clicks on object selection in remove close the app. Also in state âpreparingâ when remove starts.
Please reach out to us at the following link so the team can take a look at this together:
The problem persists in newer versions.
When using the Generative Remove feature Photo AI (3.0.1) will crash completely out when using my Intel Arc a770 video card.
When using the CPU the application will not crash.
System:
Windows 11 pro os build 22631.3447
Intel i9 11900k
ROG STRIX Z490-E motherboard
96GB ram
ASRock Arc a770 16GB video card - Running latest driver version 31.0.101.5445 (Driver version does not matter it crashed with the previous driver version also)
Steps to reproduce issue:
Start Photo AI
In Edit->Preferences->AI Processor set it to âAutoâ or âIntel(R) Arc⢠A770 Graphicsâ and Apply
Close and Re-Open Photo AI
Open a .tiff file (Example I am using is 4128x6192)
Allow Photo AI to choose and apply its autopilot enhancements
Wait for the Preview is finished
Click âAdd enhancementsâ-> Generative â Remove
Select area of photo to âRemoveâ
Select âRemove selectionâ
10.âPreparingâ spinner will start and the application crashes
Restart Photo AI
in Edit->Preferences-> AI Processor set it to âCPUâ
Repeat steps 3-10
The application finishes and âremovesâ the selected area.
Using the older Photo AI 2.x builds âRemoveâ would not crash the application but the remove action would fail with an error.
This happens after a re-start of the computer or if the machine has been up for a while.

Thanks for sharing that information with us here. I have reached out to some of the developers to see if we can figure out why this is occuring while using your GPU. I will be sure to reach out to you once I hear back from them.
Following up, this is still an issue with version 3.0.2
Is there anything else I can provide to help with this?
Thanks
Sorry but this is an incorrect merge of issues.
The issue mentioned in the earlier posts is about crashing when using the brush to select areas to remove.
While I do occasionally notice a significant pause and a large spike in memory consumption while using the selection brush this does not cause my crash.
With multiple mouse clicks I will see short hitches and pauses in Photo AI as the selection mask is created
Watching the memory graph in the Task Manager I see the amount of memory consumed jump up and down.
While âpaintingâ areas into the selection mask memory consumption will go up.
When the application pauses and hitches after a mouse stroke you will see the memory consumption drop.
With the latest version 3.0.3 just downloaded a few minutes ago the mask will disappear after one of these âhitchesâ and the memory consumption will drop until you mouse over it (no mouse buttons selected just a mouse over) and then the previous selections will appear and the memory consumption will grow again as the mask is repainted.
This is a completely different issue than I am reporting.
The crash I am seeing is after creating the selection mask (not during like above) and selecting the âRemove Selectionâ button while using the Intel Arc card for its processing.
My assumption is Topas is using OpenCL for its processing when using the GPU for processing and the issue is PhotoAI not handling the outputs correctly or is not handling a crash in the OpenCL code.
Microsoftâs implementation of OpenCL may be the root cause of the issue, but PhotoAI should not be crashing out.
If you and your dev team need me to demo the issue, I am willing to schedule a time to do so.
But it was incorrect to merge my issue thread with this issue thread that will âcloseâ in 4 days, a month earlier than my thread would have closed.
I started this thread and it was not about the painting brush, but rather object selection to remove. Painting brush works ok.
About 7 to 8 times, PhotoAI has crashed & closed the program & returned to Adobe LRC without completing the Remove function. It has happened everytime during the selection process itself. This had happened even in the previous Update.
