Why does Starlight Mini not work?

LS,

I purchased a $3000+ high-end gaming desktop to use Starlight Mini and now it says that

[1] Starlight Mini only runs on NVIDIA GPUs
[2] That i do not have any GPU memory

What can i do ? Did i purchase the wrong hardware ?

my new desktop

  • Ryzen 7 7800X3D 8-core processor
  • 32 Gb RAM
  • AMD Radion RX 9070 XT graphics card

Hi, and your GPU is? ah ok was edited, yes Starlight works only on NVida, but AMD maybe is coming, but not for sure, please Topaz Team, give us an update here.

where do i find this GPU info ? DXDIAG ?

( sorry, i am not a hardware expert but just wanted a computer capable of AI work… )

Sorry this are bad news for you Starlight today really runs only on NVidia GPUs!

ahum…

on the TOPAZLABS website it mentions ’ minimum ’ and ’ recommended ’ hardware specifications ans it does clearly list :

Graphics Card (AMD) AMD Radeon RX 5000 or higher, 8GB VRAM

With this info i ordered a new desktop…

Because AMD gpu works for all TVAI models, except Starlight mini, which was released later and they don’t wrote that. But I think you get a good price sell the brand new card and buy NVidia or you may can send it back to the reseller and get money back.

pffff - TOPAZLABS should have provided more accurate info !

The Topaz help docs have a separate section for Starlight Mini requirements, between the minimum and recommended:

Starlight Mini local rendering will not run on AMD GPU/Intel GPU/macOS systems, though cloud rendering is fully accessible at this time.

There is also a link on the main Video AI website page that points to a help document about Starlight Mini:

It would be better if they also put that link in the system requirements at the bottom of the main website page, considering how long that page is.

AMD support for Starlight Mini is still being worked on by the devs. It is taking longer to develop and get ready for release, just like the compatibility for Mac OSX systems.

So i should better hold on and not change my present hardware ?

Any estimate timing on the release of the update ?

That’s a question only you can answer. If you have projects that you need to start soon, I’d suggest considering the following:

  1. We don’t know when AMD (or Apple) support will be added, but it almost certainly will appear in a Beta first, and then be added to the base Video AI after a successful Beta run. This combined process could be months away.
  2. We have no idea about how SLM will actually perform on the AMD platform with respect to speed. It’s not unreasonable to guess that it will not meet nVidia’s speeds, given the architecture differences that currently give the nod to nVidia because of the Tensor cores that are effective for AI work.

I was in your position, having built a new computer last year with a very good AMD GPU. After much thought, I spent exactly the same $ amount for a new nVidia GPU two weeks ago. I have projects that need to be finished before the middle of October, and couldn’t gamble on a new release that would run in my AMD card.

The new setup has been running SLM 24/7 for a week, and producing very good results. Yes, it’s slow and is adding to my electric bill. But it works, it’s reliable (so far) and it’s making an impressive improvement to my video.

Good luck with your chosen course!
