The average household in the USA cannot afford an unexpected bill of 400 dollars. Looking up “Server grade laptop” brings up results that are so much, you can only ask for a quote. Ignoring those, a decent computer for running TVAI will cost about 1500. Well over double that 400 that they probably cannot afford. Now that’s just in the USA…
$400 doesn’t even get you much these days! Ever since the crypto boom/pandemic, PC components pricing has gone stratospheric. I paid over $400 CAD for my motherboard this year. Back in 2015 when I built my previous PC, normal motherboard pricing was in the $150 range, maybe $300 for top of the line. Things have gone crazy.
For me personally, I typically try to build my PCs to where they’ll last 5 years with minimal/no upgrades necessary. Because of that, I usually get stuck with quite an expensive build.
I put together my current build in mid-2021 for around $5200 USD. Overpaid for the RTX 3080 I have but other than that lucked out on getting other components for MSRP.
Prior to that, I put together my old build in mid-2016 for around $3600 or so…and that included 2x GTX 980Ti cards.
So prices have definitely gone up significantly on PC components and honestly…everywhere else too.
My older 3.x machine is a 10-year old repurposed CAD workstation
(my “newer” 4.x machine is a 5-year old repurposed CAD workstation).
Last night, just for laughs, I downgraded to 3.5.4 on the newer 4.x box long enough to run benchmarks and some test clips. Did not see any significant speed difference between 3.x and 4.x on the same system. But I don’t push TVAI the way some people here do, and I long ago accepted that my lease-return workstations are always 4-5 years behind the bleeding edge of technology.
Picking this moment in time to disable the entire installation/upgrade over lack of AVX2 rather than just disabling specific functions that depend on it seems like an odd choice to me, especially when you consider that some people in these forums have hacked 4.x onto non-AVX2 systems and not reported any issues with it so far. You would think Topaz would want to hang onto as many paying customers/paid beta testers as they could.
Same thought about not being able to install 3.x and 4.x on the same system. I run tools that are way more expensive than this that allow installs of multiple releases (because sometimes someone wants work done on an old file that the newest version of a tool doesn’t seem to handle well). If the Topaz license is good for two seats, why can’t those seats both be on the same machine?
That is expected. But off course what is not expected is that users pay for that cost of development. Because it adds no benefit to the users. The whole issue of many companies today, including Topaz treating their users as beta testers was an issue raised more than once and for good reason. In the case of version 4 of Topaz Video AI, it was a buggy mess when released. That’s fine. But it should have been released as alpha or beta for people who want to test it, not as general release version, advertised as something it is not.
If the product is not ready that is fine. I can understand that. Its just unreasonable for people to pay for the beta process while advertising it as finished product. In a world from just a decade or more ago, we would call that false advertisement. Today is more or less normalized with so many companies. Do we users really want that? I say no we don’t.
But I guess enough ink has be spilled on these forums. Topaz is unlikely to change their policy so Its probably a waste of time to try to bring it up too many times. Lets see what happens in the upcoming months and years. Same trend or correction of course.

What is the software’s name?
These are the biggest ones:
AutoCAD. I have an older release installed along with the current one because it has plugins I still use that were never updated because the company that made them went out of business.
Adobe FrameMaker. A lot of people still use older releases because they don’t like Adobe’s current subscription-only pricing. Weird things can happen if you open documents from older releases in a newer one and then save them back so people who still use the older release can open them. And every new release seems to obsolete the files from the one/s that came before it (Adobe is the king of forced upgrading).

I thought you meant programs that make it possible to install different versions of main programs in parallel on one system.
I did. Different releases of both installed on the same computer. I can even run them both at the same time, though the only reason to do that would be to copy content from one to the other, something that just isn’t a thing with Topaz apps.
I have worked in more places in the US than most US people these words are not from me , any way it was a free advise normally it costs money. did you know there is a positive correlation with a high significant trust value of people purchasing an expensive 1500 dollar iphone and a 300 us dollar laptop
Nvidea and topaz are based on innovation which costs money to keep the innovation going on

We have already had users of all kinds here.
People who write that software xyz is better and then when you test it, it’s a disaster.
There are also people who have always been complaining (I’ve been active since 2020), no matter which version it was.

OK, test with 4.0.6 and everything works well for my super 8 workflow and an image source of scanner 1440x1080 px.
In: FPS 16
Out: FPS 25 (PAL Country).
All at 5 to 5.3 fps.
I am satisfied with the result because in a single pass.
(I like the Jittery Motion for stabilization …)
I consider a second pass to redding to 2x. To be continued… 
Did you scan your super8 yourself or was ist done by a commercial provider?
I ask because I’m not happy with the quality delivered by the provider I used.

it is an old projector whose engine no longer works that I have changed by going up an electric scooter engine and that I adjusted the speed to 8.33 FPS via an Arduino and an adjustable external power supply. I changed the lamp with a 20W LED and placed a frosted plexiglass diffuser.
To capture the images, I placed my DSLR Nikon in front of the objective: it is an objective capture for objective. The Nikon is at 25 FPS.
To remove excess images (one out of 3 image is useful) i use an AVISYNTH+ script which uses the getdups.dll plugin (only 32 bits) and to execute this script I use virtualdub2. At the exit I have a clip at 16.33 fps but I round for 16 fps.
Impressive, thanks for posting. Also presumably needs a lot of source material, or very important to you material, to make it worth the while? Unless you enjoy the challenge…
P.S. Have you ever considered offering the scanning as a service (I don’t need it, but was listening to someone complain about the poor quality of their professional transfers a couple of weeks back)?

I have a number of programs that allow that. DXO for example allows as many versions as you like. I still have two different versions of FilmPack stand-alone installed as I think an older version has a much better user interface.
Oh and I just noticed I have two copies of a video encoder program, that was an accident…
I also have two different copies of Canon’s EOS Utility (as they dropped support for an old camera I have, though don’t really use, but who knows) and two different DPP versions.

I had launched this challenge to make this assembly from an old broken projector because I had several personal S8 and others inherited from an old uncle. At the time (2011-2012) I found websites that explained how to do it. I was inspired by that.
My uncle’s S8 date from 1964 to 1978, mine were from 1984-1989. These S8s have great sentimental value.
I went to VHS/SVHS afterwards.
No, I don’t plan to make other transfers. All the equipment is dismantled and stored in a corner of the attic. There are lots of sites on the web where we must surely see even better solutions than mine today.
I also hear that sometimes people are not happy with transfers made by professionals, therefore abnormal.
It is true that doing it even gives good results but it takes a lot, a lot of time. Each films was scanned in double see triple exemplary. I had already treated my scan with Virtualdub2 but with TVEAI I reinvested time to get better results. I am lucky i have time, I am old man now and no longer work.
Now it’s Tveai that takes care of me. I test, I correct, etc … for assembly (review the cuts, etc.) and the sound, I send my medias in Davinci Resolve … I have time and I like it.
