Nice, I just did one test upscaling a 1080p source to 4k with Starlight Mini and can confirm that it worked with max memory set to 100% instead of hanging endlessly on loading model. I restarted after changing that setting to be sure it took effect.
Speed has improved, possibly because it is now using all my VRAM and not just 56% of it.
On 7.0 it took me 15 minutes to process a 2 second clip. On 7.0.1 it took 11m30s with the first 4 minutes of that being the starting up phase. I do have a lot of other stuff running on my PC which may have slightly impacted performance.
GPU: RTX 5090
CPU: i5-12600K
RAM: 32GB DDR4
It did max out my RAM at some points and I wonder if that bottlenecked it at all. The last piece of my new build should be arriving tomorrow so I’ll be able to upgrade the CPU to a 9950X3D and RAM to 96GB of DDR5. I’m curious to see if that will make a difference for Starlight Mini performance when I do so.
Screenshot below from MSI Afterburner which starts shortly before I clicked on export and ends where you see the GPU memory usage drop back down to 2.6GB.
Edit: I’ve retested with my upgraded CPU and RAM and it has brought my export times down to about 9m30s for the exact same scenario. The 2 second clip has 60 frames.
Some interesting results so far with a 5090. I’d love to hear if anyone with a 5090 is seeing speed increases using a similar resolution and 2x upscale.
Original File: 672x450 Cartoon
FPS: 29.97
Output Length: ~2 Seconds
2x Upscale Setting
Exported Resolution: 1280x936
Memory Used During Processing: 26.6gb
Output Speed: .9 to 1.5fps (Variable) Starts at 1.5fps for maybe 30 seconds, then drops to .9 and stays there.
Processing Time: 1m58s
Processing a 2x ~2 sec clip of the same file in 7.0 version was .8fps.
Doesn’t seem like I’m seeing a speed increase with 2x upscales. If others are, I may completely wipe all topaz files from my pc and do a complete fresh install. I had to do this with some of the beta versions of starlight mini.
I don’t know that it matters. I did a export speed test, then deleted ALL topaz files and did a full reinstall/download and then tested again. Same speed either way. I got excited when I first saw the 1.5 but it didn’t last long. I’d be super happy if my speeds went from .8 to 1.5.
Testing with 320x200 (actually 720p video though) pre-rendered intro sequence from Fade to Black DOS game footage, to see, how SL Mini deals with pixelated and artificially upscaled content:
That’s really cool! I bet Petroglyph wishes they had this tech when they remastered the Command & Conquer Remaster FMV videos! Maybe someone can make a mod with all new upscaled videos using starlight mini.
Yeah, there’s no technical reason for SL Mini hasn’t been PROPERly managed not to render 6x more performance (added to its current FPS), minimum, today… especially considering what stacks are available… yesterday… for today’s workflows.
The black line issue in the video has indeed been resolved.
With the RTX 4090, performance improved slightly—from 0.2 fps to 0.3 fps.
It feels just a bit faster, but not significantly.
