On a base M4 Mac Mini, I am getting an average of 18 seconds per frame on 720x480 input upscaled 2X (based on the elapsed time reported by Topaz Video 1.7) with Starlight Precise 2.6 (sharpness level 1). Running the latest version of Tahoe.
Here is the performance summary for 3 systems I have access to:
| System | Proc | CPU | GPU | RAM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mac Studio | M4 Max | 14 | 32 | 36GB |
| MacBook Pro | M5 | 10 | 10 | 24GB |
| Mac Mini | M4 | 10 | 10 | 16GB |
And the # of seconds per frame on different video files. I only tracked the vertical resolution, which explain some minor differences

Some factors were “required” by different versions of Video AI (min). I haven’t noticed huge differences in performance between version 1.6 vs. 1.7, and SLP 2.5 vs. 2.6
With today’s new Studio Driver 616.56. No significant changes from previous drivers.

Just received Mac Mini M6 base version (M6 12 CPU / 12 GPU / 16GB RAM / 256GB SSD). After 1h+ I stopped Aion 16X Slowmo, memory pressure was high (15GB used + 3GB swap), so I figured it was not interesting anyway. Will try Starlight Precise now

Starlight Precise 2.6 on Mac Mini base model (M6 12 CPU / 12 GPU / 16GB RAM / 256GB SSD). Getting 8 spf per frame on a 360p video, in comparison with 14 spf on Mac Mini M4 (also base model). MacBook Pro M5 was running at ~10 spf on the same type of video (not the same video, so complexity can be altering results).
Could Topaz bring Starlight Precise to the Benchmark? (already asked)
Thanks!
My M2 Ultra would not run the benchmark for Aion. It never got to the Starlight benchmark because it was stuck on Aion. I tried to run Aion on a small video file and it crashed after a few minutes.
I ran the same video with Starlight Precise 2.6, 640x480 2x up-scaled to 1280x960 on 2 different machines, both are base models of Mac Mini:
- Mac Mini M4 10 CPU / 10 GPU / 16GB RAM / 256GB SSD
- Mac Mini M6 12 CPU / 12 GPU / 16GB RAM / 256GB SSD
Mac Mini M4 took 18.0s per frame
Mac Mini M6 took 10.4s per frame!
That’s a 73% performance increase!!! A few notes:
- M6 comes with 2 additional GPU cores vs. M4
- Base price has increased, but that’s a different story

When you consider the price (even increased) and power consumption, this little machine is impressive!
