New SDR-HDR Model: Hyperion 2!!

Hyperion 2, is a great update to our previous iteration. This version of the model now expands your color and nit value range even further! This is fantastic for wider spectrum manipulation for VFX Compositing and for modern viewing on HDR supportive displays!

About

  • Converts 8-bit GenAI or archival video into HDR, high bit-depth media suitable for professional finishing pipelines.
  • Expands tonal range and color precision to provide significantly greater grading latitude in highlights, shadows, and midtones.
  • Prevents highlight and shadow clamping often seen in standard range and native GenAI video sources.
  • Expands existing color opportunities/steps for professional compositing and color manipulation workflows.
  • The additional color opportunities greatly reduces visible banding and compression artifacts common in 8 bit renders.
  • Has great details with text and textures even during high motion blur areas.
  • Export ProRes video or EXR (Pro) image sequences.
  • Support ACES color output with EXR (Pro) renders for better integration into industry-standard film and television pipelines.
  • This works best for medium to high quality content.
  • This model has some built in enhancements to revitalize and improve content.
  • This version is an easy “one click” solution. There are no parameters to adjust.
  • Max input and output resolution for this model is 3840x3840.

Technical things to know
Nvidia Requirements:

  • Currently Nvidia Only
  • Requires 16GB VRAM though 24GB VRAM is recommended.
  • Targeted for GPU compute compatibility of 8.9. This is also the recommendation.
    • Please note, though there might be some success with a CC of 8.6 cards, this is not technically supported and some may encounter a less ideal experience.

Colorspace Outputs

ProRes Primaries: BT.2020 PQ
ProRes Transfer Function: BT.709
EXR (Pro only) Image Sequence: Aces 2065-1

Things to Consider

  • SDR to HDR does not operate well with interlaced footage. If you do have interlaced footage, it’s recommended that you deinterlace first before applying this tool.
  • Though this model has some enhancement benefits additional enhancements with this SDR to HDR Model can be a great combo to reduce issues from source such as compression and artifacts for better results.
  • Extreme cases of video with very muddy/dark imagery or very bright/blown out content, may produce limited results with the limited source range to build upon.
  • An HDR display will be needed in order to view the results properly. Otherwise results will look washed out.

Known Issues

  • Cloud Export is not yet supported on both Mac and Windows. Coming soon!
  • Limited codec options for local rendering. Looking to expand the current options!

New Topaz Panel for Premiere!

We have built a UXP panel for Adobe Premiere users! Topaz Labs for Premiere is new utility that introduces a “send to cloud” workflow to batch upscale video clips and images directly from the Premiere.

Simply drag video or image clips from your bin or timeline into the panel, choose an AI enhancement model, and upscale to HD, 4K, or even 8K. Better yet, this process does not take up system resources, allowing you to continue editing. Rendered files are automatically imported to your project and placed in timeline. Learn more here

FAQ:

Q: What is Topaz Labs for Premiere?

A: This is a free UXP panel for Adobe Premiere users that is used to send media from your Premiere project to the Topaz Cloud processing system for AI upscaling and enhancement.

Processing requires a Topaz Labs user account and paid cloud credits. Sign up for a user account here.

Q: How do I buy cloud credits?

A: Every Topaz subscription plan comes with cloud credits. You can purchase more cloud credits directly in your Topaz account. Your Topaz Video credits can be used in the panel. Learn more about cloud credits here.

Q: How does the Premiere panel compare to Topaz Video?

A: The panel is designed to provide an experience optimized specifically for Premiere with the ability to work directly from your timeline or bin. This allows users to batch upscale clips without opening any other application. The panel uses paid cloud credits only and offers both video and image processing. Using the panel, the user chooses automatic enhancement settings and sends to cloud, with no real-time previews.

Topaz Video is a desktop application that offers local or cloud rendering and includes many more AI video models with exposed parameters for refined user interactions and preview rendering. Topaz Video also includes advanced functions such as Stabilization, Grain, Motion Deblur, SDR>HDR conversion, file based renders (EXR, DPX) and so much more.

Q: Can I use the panel in After Effects?

A: Currently we do not support After Effects

Q. Is there a list of bugs or known issues?
A. Please refer to the documentation for list of current limitations or known issues. We have lots of improvements (including ProRes support) coming to the panel soon!

I still have problems with SLF & SLP.

logsForSupport.zip (1,2 MB)

Try using this Studio Driver version on your GPU and see if that helps. Studio Driver v591.74

If you still get an error, grab the updated logs and send to me at help@topazlabs.com and we can keep investigating.

.mkv still does not work. Used the studio driver V591.74

Starlight Fast 2 is now working with .mkv (failed with 1.4.0)

  • Now fails with .mp4 (worked with 1.4.0)

Starlight HQ fails with .mkv & .mp4 (.mp4 worked with 1.4.0)

Starlight precise fails with .mkv

More .mkv issues

Hyperion 2 never leaves estimating, Loading… estimates forever.

works with .mp4

Worse than the last update. In the last update, I could take 20min 1080p to 2160p HDR in about 1.5hrs, no issue. But doing a stress test, rendering 2.5hrs 2160p HDR to 4320p HDR crashed about 3-4hrs in. Totally locked my system. Had to do a hard reboot.

In this update 20min 1080p to 2160p HDR crashed after 31min35sec. At least I didn’t get hard locked, I guess.

So this update is worse. Back to version 1.0.4. The only stable build for my setup so far this year.

Regarding the “Dehalo: 1” setting, I found it certainly had some effect, but unfortunately, it was limited when it came to suppressing the excessive details generated in scenes with harsh, direct sunlight.

Even after lowering Recover Detail to the minimum and pushing Reduce Noise nearly to its maximum, I couldn’t quite mask the over-processed look. To me, this result highlights a specific boundary of Iris MQ’s capabilities.

At this point, it seems we may have to wait for an RD adjustment slider to be added to SLP itself to truly address this. While there’s no doubt that SLP is the best model we’ve seen so far, it could also be described as an “unfinished” model, where its greatest strengths can inadvertently become weaknesses depending on the source material.

NYX may suppress the over-processed look more aggressively than Iris LQ or MQ. I used reduce noise 50 and anti-aliasing/deblur -90 with a little bit silver grain which removed some heavy noise on the face that not supposed to exist and keep it not too plastic.

With version 1.5, I’m experiencing display issues (see screenshot).
I can no longer resize the window, which makes the top bar unusable.
This problem did not occur in version 1.4.

Does this fix the issue with Starlight Mini not working for AMD GPUs that was introduced in version 1.3 and up?

I was able to solve the issue by reducing the scaling from 300% to 250%. The display still isn’t ideal, but at least version 1.5 is now usable.

However, I immediately found two additional issues. As far as I can tell, all Starlight models ignore the minimum resolution of 960p. When using a video with a resolution of 180p, only 720p was available as an output option. In version 1.4, the same video still allowed a 960p option.

The new model Hyperion 2 generates a file without any media data during the rendering process. As a result, neither the preview function in Topaz works, nor can the file be played externally. Because there is no preview with this model, you are quite literally left to be surprised by the final result.

I haven’t yet tested whether .mkv files can be processed properly. Given the issues so far, I’m not very optimistic.

Is there any timeline for Mac users getting these updates? I feel that we should receive a pro rated discount for the lack of updates. I’m not sure I’ll continue with my subscription.

Try Iris LQ V1.

This gives a much softer look than Iris MQ.

The research team and devs are working on Mac and AMD versions. When they have an option for either they will get it added in.

Yes, there was a patch that should have fixed the issue where the in-app checker was not reading the AMD GPU VRAM correctly.

As Kevin from the research team mentioned in the 1.4.0 release thread, they are working on this.

After running several tests, I unfortunately have very little positive to say about version 1.5.

In this version as well, .mkv files are not usable with the SLP model. It immediately results in an error.

The version also has issues with a desktop resolution of 3840 Ă— 2160 at a scaling of 300%. A maximum of 250% scaling is supported.

The new HDR model, Hyperion 2, causes RAM overflows in various scenarios. I was unable to determine whether this is due to the file format, resolution, or something else, as the error occurred with both .mp4 and .mkv files. .mov files seem to work without issues, but I cannot say that with certainty.

Additionally, Hyperion 2 produces a (possibly) faulty file that can only be played after the rendering process is complete. The model also reports incorrect rendering speeds. Rendering one minute of 1080p video at 24 fps took around 40 minutes in my case.

Furthermore, the model applies an additional image enhancement. While this effect is quite subtle, it still alters the footage beyond simply adding HDR.

However, there is at least one positive aspect to mention: rendering a manually selected segment within a video works in this version when using the SLP model.

Is anyone else having trouble installing Neuroserver? I tried running the installer in repair mode like suggested below. When that didn’t work, I uninstalled Topaz Video entirely (including leftover files and registry entries) and reinstalled it from scratch with my antivirus and such turned off, but the same error gets thrown every time. To wit:

”Neuroserver component install did not finish: neuroserver.tar.xz. First Issue: SHA-512 mismatch after streaming download. Video AI will use the built-in backend. To retry, run the Topaz Video installer again and choose Repair.”

Thanks for the quick update and fix, SLP and all SL model finally work on both my RTX5070ti + 3090 dual GPU rig and 5090 rig.

1st taste of the SLP, yes, it indeed quite impressive. I tried three workflow below:

  1. 480p → SLP 3x
  2. 480p → Proteus Natural 1x → SLP 3x
  3. 480p → SLM 3x → SLP 1x

Result from best to worst 3 → 2 → 1

2 vs 3 is quite close, but 3 is most natural in face, skin and edge details with good sharpness, whereas 2 can see some compression defect due to Proteus Natural is not superior in terms of deblocking compare to SLM.

1 is the worst, as SLP 3x alone is not able to reduce the compression defect as good as SLM in the original video, so the output colour gradient isn’t so smooth.

If given time constraint, i think 2 is the best compromise in terms of speed vs quality.
