Again: Topaz can work with even 8Gb VRAM, but it’s slow as hell because of tiling and blockswap.
Ditto.
When a render was completed just now, an Error appeared and my original video file disappeared.
Had to rerender, going to try again but the My Presets does not open anymore and I have to copy from other source files in the current project.
Same on mac.
Which is compounded further and worse when we get a release like this that inexplicably breaks simple things.
Neither acceptable or good enough when paying all this money annually.
Here. Version 1.0.3:
Nothing but 720.
I installed the 1.0.2 version and everything works again:
If you guys expect people to pay you monthly for this, stuff like this should not be tolerated at all.
FYI, the link that is supposed to take you to the latest Topaz Video release on the account page is still pointing at version 1.01. And on a similar note, could you please list what the latest version is on the download link, so we don’t have to download it or go to the forum to see if it’s changed or not?
For me minimum, 2x and 3x show different resolutions, although 4x shows the same as 3x.
You really have to double check the real resolution of the output video file, with Starlight though. This often deviates from what is stated in the GUI.
Earrlier you could easily tell by that if SL really did 2x, 3x or 4x.
But, at least on the MAC, with this last 1.0.3 version SL it seems to always do 1x and then “cheat” by doing a simple bucubic/lanczos upscale of that file to the resolution that you’re told in the GUI, maybe to trick some users into thinking it’d work.
But, if you look at the now abysmal quality of those SL (again, at least on AppleSilicon, NVIDIA tests will follow) you definitely notice that this is NOT the 3x or 4x model, likely even only 1x. You can also tell this by the rendering speed.
I know, but I’ll check that later. It’s bad enough the GUI shows wrong values.
So, tested SL on the Windows PC with RTX 4070:
There we get a totally different picture:
Starlight indeed works as it should here with 2x doing 2x, 4x now doing real 4x (so this bug of 1.0.2 is cured) AND especially 3x not only being back to be selectable but apparently also fully working!
So, as a preliminary verdict:
Windows/NVidia top, AppleSilicon flop.
@TopazLabs: what the heck did you do to Starlight for AppleSilicon and why??
P.S.: strange enough on the PC SL only loaded 7.something MB with this version even though I told it to delete old model files. But since it is working I’m not changing anything here.
So i did a short Starlight test V1.0.3 (Windows) and seems to work. I did 3x of 640x480 and get out real 1920x1440, I think it’s no lanczos upscale

So, I now did some quick tests:
SL Mini 2x and 3x had the resolutions they were supposed to.
SL sharp 3x: failed with “resolution error”
Yes, contrary to some earlier versions the output resolution is correct - but not the quality.
E.g. you get a video with 4x resolution but shitty quality. Extremely distorted text and overall not at all looking good.
If you have a different experience on the Mac we’d need to nail this down to different hardware (M1/2/3/4/5) and/or different video sources…
Edit: ah, you’re on windows. There Starlight does indeed work well (again) - see the report for that above.
I guess you’re on NVIDIA?
There SL is in fact working - see my post above.
ok that’s worse, I must do some more tests comparisons then.
Just saw that you’re on windows.
There Starlight is working well. The issues I reported seem to be limited to the AppleSilicon version.
Yes, though I wasn’t pleased with the result. 3x looked great, but the person in the video wasn’t recognisable. I mean the quality was just fine but it generated a different face.
aha then it’s clear, I tought hmm I can’t see the worse result at a first look it seems ok to me. a big comparison between V7 and Studio i have planed to do. later.
Windows 1.0.3 is working for me in terms of upscale 4x, and quality. I am getting 0.2fps though, and expected more on my new 5090 desktop.
I could knock the processes up to 2, and retry. Everybody else getting low fps?
I might re-install 7.1.0 again and see if it gives me 0.4fps with a similar quality to 1.0.3.
