I submitted a ticket about this issue on the weekend and since I’ve not heard back I thought I should post it here.
On the weekend there was an update to Topaz Studio to v1.4.2. Since the upgrade Topaz Studio will only launch once from within Photoshop CC 2017. When I close Studio and go back to Photoshop, Studio will not re-launch as a plugin. Unless I close Photoshop & re-launch it.
I did not have this issue prior to the weekend update.
Last night I applied another Studio update to 1.4.3 and the issue remains.
Ironically I can launch Studio as a plugin from Lightroom CC 2017.
I did not notice this problem in v1.4.2 but I am experiencing this same problem now in v 1.4.3. The problem is the same in the latest Photoshop-CC 2018 update. I agree that this is very annoying indeed.
I am on PC with Windows 10 and Photoshop-CC (as of today 2018).
Before there were no problems with earlier versions of Topaz Studio.
I never encountered the problem in the previous version either. For me it occurred only in the latest version with Photoshop CC-2017 before and Photoshop CC-2018 now also.

Windows Home Premium 10 64 bit version. I7-4770S with 32 gbs of DDR3 memory. Photoshop CC 2017 however I just upgraded to Photoshop CC 2018 and the problem continues.
It is quite annoying. Never happened prior to Studio 1.4.2.
I have a feeling the problem occurs as an effect of the notification of the update coming in while using Topaz Studio as a plug-in in Photoshop.
When going back to Photoshop the Topaz Studio update (or its install-app) asks to update at that point and that moment.
As a result there is no install-setup saved of every update. That makes it impossible to revert back to an earlier installer. The question is what would happen if I would use the Topaz Studio Online installer as it came included with the 5DayDeal 2017 downloads. Would that be an earlier version and would I find all pro-tools back when I re-install Topaz Studio from that download.
In the past I’ve never had an issue with installing or updating Topaz Plugins. However my experience with Studio is starting to sour despite my fondness for Impression which is making me forget I own Painter 2017 and Painter Essentials.
If only there was a plugin version of Impression instead of forcing us to use Studio. Sorry Studio will NEVER replace Photoshop or Lightroom despite having masking, layers, history, etc.
In my Photoshop CC (2018 before 2017) Impression2 is listed under my Topaz Labs plugins ……
That does not necessarily mean it really works as such since I haven’t used it that way as a plugin form Photoshop ……
But since it’s listed there I suppose it will work as such …… maybe that’s the difference between Impression1 and Impression2 ….

If you own Impression2 then it opens under the Topaz Labs menu in Photoshop - and it is not the Studio version. What will happen about this in the future I cannot say, but Impression2 works as a standalone and as the normal/classic way as a Photoshop/LR/Affninity plugin
Hi, I too am experiencing the exact same problem. I also submitted a ticket & have not heard anything. Updates to both Ps & Studio in the last 24 hours have not fixed the problem.
I am very disappointed in Topaz as I purchased the plugs to run from Ps & now any updates forces me to use the second rate Studio as a host. Not very happy with Topaz at all.
They are equivalent, for all intents and purposes here. When we restart the forum server, the discourse server gets used, automatically. We’re working on fixing that permanently. However, I can confirm the links are safe.
I haven’t seen a reaction from Topaz yet on my suggestion that the cause of the problem could be in the update procedure taking place directly from the update-message in Topaz Studio as a plugin from Photoshop … that could possibly lead to a corrupted or incomplete procedure for updating …
I would like to hear if this could have caused the problem …
