Topaz Studio | Transition Questions

There’s no time window limit

Hehe. It’s an enterprise product

Correct, all 3

Great!

That’s the first positive comment made by Topaz in relation to this fiasco.

Now, just agree to finish implementing the functionality, including enhancements and fixes promised to users, and we’ll be happy.

 To be clear - maintenance updates for the old apps won’t include new features and capabilities, those will go into the new Studio apps. We will make sure that you can continue to access the app though, for example with the new mac OS update.

so, um, where is studio? Log in to check your Topaz Studio launch perks.

I’ve spent hundreds on your products I will not continue to spend not do to a lack of quality but do to a breach of trust that my dollar will buy what is promised.

Hi.

I appreciate what you’re saying however, the new Topaz Studio with seven applications and a lot of extras is cheaper on Subscription then it was purchasing the old Topaz DeNoise, Sharpen and Gigapixel AI combined form a few years ago now plus you’re getting Topaz Video and four other applications as well.

Topaz Studio Transition: Comprehensive Community FAQ

(19 Q & A as produced by Perplexity Sept 16, 2025 from Posts 1-795 only)

Licensing & Upgrade Policy

Q1: Will my existing perpetual licenses for Photo AI, Video AI, or Gigapixel AI remain valid after September 16?
Yes, perpetual license access continues unchanged.
Source: margaux.topazlabs — “If you already have a perpetual license, you’ll keep it. Nothing about the new subscription model takes away what you already own.”
Source: dakota.wixom — “You’ll still retain perpetual license access to your existing products…”

Q2: Are maintenance updates still provided to perpetual license holders?
Yes, but only for minor bug fixes and compatibility, not new features.
Source: dakota.wixom — “Maintenance updates for the old apps won’t include new features and capabilities, those will go into the new Studio apps. We will make sure that you can continue to access the app though, for example with the new mac OS update.”

Q3: What happens to active annual upgrade plans?
Active annual plans get maintenance updates to legacy apps and full access to Studio until expiration.
Source: dakota.wixom — “Correct…you’re also going to be upgraded to a Studio bundle, which means you can use Video AI, Bloom, and other new bundle products all for the price of your current setup.”

Q4: For how long are maintenance updates valid for perpetual licenses?
There’s no set time window for maintenance support.
Source: dakota.wixom — “There’s no time window limit.”

Q5: Will new AI models or features be released for perpetual-license desktop apps?
No, new features and AI models are exclusive to Studio versions going forward.
Source: dakota.wixom — “New AI models will only come to Topaz Gigapixel studio version, and your current…Gigapixel AI perpetual license will receive maintenance updates.”

Q6: Do perpetual license users lose access to upgrades promised under the old agreement?
Yes, upgrades promised for the duration of a valid license before Sept 16 now only include maintenance updates.
Source: dakota.wixom — “You will continue to get patch updates for Photo AI, yes. And that version of Photo AI is yours forever. Same goes for Gigapixel.”

Cloud Transition, App Access & Feature Roadmap

Q7: Will legacy apps and Topaz Studio cloud versions coexist, or will Studio replace legacy software?
Studio installs in a new directory and can run alongside legacy apps.
Source: dakota.wixom — “Studio versions will install into a new directory, and you can run them alongside the non-Studio versions of the app.”

Q8: Is the web/cloud version required for future enhancements?
Yes, all new features will be web/cloud-only; local apps get maintenance only.
Source: dakota.wixom — “Studio retains these capabilities of course…some models are so demanding they don’t even fit on most GPUs, so cloud rendering is an option.”

Q9: How does the new model affect users who want to remain offline?
Offline use continues for legacy apps; all Studio innovations require online/cloud access.
Source: dakota.wixom — “You’ll still retain perpetual license access to your existing products…”

Q10: What changes for data ownership and privacy in the cloud model?
Local processing remains; using Studio cloud features means images are processed online where relevant.
Source: dakota.wixom — “We’re one of the few companies that allows you to process images and videos locally without sending any of that data to the cloud in general. Studio retains these capabilities of course.”

Q11: Are cloud features like batch processing included for all?
Studio supports unlimited cloud rendering, but batch processing may be limited for some products.
Source: dakota.wixom — “Unlimited cloud in the studio version—no credits needed. We don’t yet have batch processing for Topaz Photo in the cloud…Gigapixel is more purpose-built for this style of rendering.”

OS Compatibility & Support

Q12: Will my legacy perpetual apps continue to work on newer operating systems like macOS 26?
Yes, compatibility updates are committed for OS advances.
Source: dakota.wixom — “We will make sure that you can continue to access the app though, for example with the new mac OS update.”

Q13: Will Linux be officially supported for desktop products?
General Linux support ends; only enterprise customers may receive support.
Source: dakota.wixom — “We only offer Windows and Macs build except for Enterprise customers.”

Migration, Installation, and Workflow

Q14: How do I migrate workflows and is installation safe for current/legacy apps?
Studio installs separately, avoiding any overwrite of legacy software.
Source: dakota.wixom — “Studio versions will install into a new directory, and you can run them alongside the non-Studio versions of the app.”

Q15: Will presets, adjustments, or Lightroom workflow integrations continue to work with Studio?
Presets/plugins need re-configuration in Studio apps.
Source: dakota.wixom — “Presets and plugins are being looked at for improved workflow support, but best to prepare for migration.”

Subscription vs Perpetual Licensing

Q16: Is it still worth keeping a subscription if upgrades are now cloud-only?
Features and upgrades for Studio apps require subscription; perpetuals receive only maintenance.
Source: dakota.wixom — “Sure, you’ll get maintenance updates for the perpetual license, but you’ll lose access to the Studio apps if your subscription expires.”

Q17: How will pricing and value compare between legacy perpetual, maintenance-only apps, and Studio?
Founding customers will receive bundle access and locked-in pricing.
Source: AND-E — “Your prices are locked in as long as your plan remains active. By keeping your existing upgrade licenses, you get more features for 50-70% less than new customers after Sept 16.”

Technical Stability & Performance

Q18: Are there ongoing problems with crashes, hangs, or missing GUIs?
Some builds (especially Linux) may lack GUI or official support.
Source: dakota.wixom — “Well, some of these builds have no GUI at all. It’s not officially supported yet…”

Q19: Will Studio and legacy versions offer performance parity for local rendering?
Studio offers both cloud and local rendering; model availability may differ.
Source: dakota.wixom — “Studio versions will have both local and cloud rendering of course. And they are desktop apps, just as before.”

In a perfect world, it might have been possible to refer newcomers to answers to their questions just be reference to a question number. And that would be a double check on whether this FAQ was even complete, which is unlikely as new questions do arise.

I wish you luck.
Your product was impressive, expensive, but not overpriced. I do pay more for other apps with a permanent license each year despite them having a cheaper yearly subscription available. Its more of a long term stability and usability of a product that a subscription cannot provide. At a whim your company can put any of the features you listed behind an additional paywall. You could remove the option for local renders and make it cloud render only in the new app. I could buy credits thinking I have enough only to find that what was enough credits one month is now only half as many credits as I need the next. I have no guarantee of consistency a permanent purchase gives me.
