Hello everyone! :waving_hand:

:loudspeaker: Topaz Photo 1.4.0 is here!

This release is focused on making Topaz Photo smarter, leaner, and faster to set up. We’re introducing a new processing mode for Wonder 2, quick install options in the installer for a faster setup, and under-the-hood upgrades that make the app more efficient.

Here’s what’s included in the Topaz Photo v1.4.0 release:

  • Auto Mode for Wonder 2 — Pre-downscaling Wonder Recommendation
  • Faster Installation — Recommended & On-Demand Model Download
  • Faster Analysis on Mac — Improved image analysis efficiency to reduce analysis time

Auto Mode for Wonder 2 — Fix False Resolution and Low Detail

One of the trickier image problems to solve is false resolution, where an image has been upscaled or resampled to a larger pixel size but the actual detail doesn’t match those dimensions. Standard upscaling models tend to produce poor results on these images, and until now Autopilot had no way to detect the issue or point you toward a better option. The same applies to images that are heavily blurred or simply low in recoverable detail.

Wonder 2 is great for low and medium resolution images. It does not handle false resolution images with normal scale and size controls.

We’ve added a new analysis model to Autopilot Analysis that looks for these conditions. When low detail or false resolution is detected, using Wonder 2 will automatically select its Auto mode.

In Auto mode, Wonder 2 determines the appropriate output size based on the actual recoverable detail in the image rather than its nominal pixel dimensions. When Autopilot selects this recommendation, the output size is set automatically with no manual configuration needed.

Recommended & On-Demand Model Downloads

Installing Topaz Photo has always meant downloading every model upfront, including large specialized models that most people use rarely. This made the installation very slow and storage-heavy before you could even open an image.

The reason comes down to model size. The core editing models covering Denoise, Sharpen, Upscale, Face Recovery, Lighting, and Color are compact and cover the vast majority of workflows. The generative models are significantly larger and produce strong results, but they are designed for rarer and more specific image situations. Bundling everything together meant new users were waiting through a long download for models that are less commonly used in their workflow.

The installer now allows you to decide which models to download.

Recommended models includes all the analysis and core GAN models: everything you need for Denoise, Sharpen, Upscale, Face Recovery, Lighting, and Color. Download is fast and the full standard editing experience is available immediately.

All models includes Remove, Super Focus, Dust & Scratch, Wonder, Upscale - Recover v3, and Upscale - Standard MAX.

If you choose recommended models and later use a feature that requires a model you don’t have, the application will download it automatically on demand. No need to reinstall or manually manage anything.

NOTE: the processing ETA for generative models on the first use will be inaccurate due to the models downloading.

If you plan to use the app offline or know you will need the generative models regularly, we recommend selecting all models at install.

Faster Autopilot on Mac

Autopilot analysis runs on every image you open, which means any improvement to analysis speed has an outsized effect on the experience, particularly for the first file loaded in a session.

In looking at where time was being spent, we identified a few models that had become bottlenecks. For each one we looked for improvements, whether that meant finding a smaller model variant that produces the same results or changing how the analysis models are executed.

On Mac, the results are significant. Analysis time in testing dropped from 19 seconds in v1.3.3 to under 8 seconds in v1.4.0, more than a 50% reduction.

Windows was already running analysis quickly. We made some improvements there as well, though the new false resolution detection model added in this release offset most of the gains, keeping overall analysis time roughly flat.

Changelog

  • Auto mode for Wonder 2
  • Recommended and all model options in installer
  • Just in time model downloads

Well, all that’s left is to test this new version.

Recover V3 is still not fixed for my machine.

Remove V2 still does not work on M1 max Mac Studio with Tahoe 26.4. Why and why just on M1 ( max)?

You’ll have to switch your Windows OS to English locale (with [dot] as a decimal character) and reboot your system to alleviate this bug, until Topaz fixes this. The keyboard layout can stay native to your language.

I still have the same bug with Wonder 1 (cloud).

Since 1.3, when I try to upload a picture with a high resolution, which doesn’t necessary mean high quality (photo from my smartphone), I get a message saying that there was an error running the model.

Prior to v1.3 it always worked and I constantly got good to great results!

With Wonder 2 (cloud) it works as usual.

I have to go back to v1.2. Hopefully you’ll fix it.

Unable to install v1.4.

Internet connection is fine, and I’ve not made any changes to my system recently.

I’ll try later.

Exactly. It was enough for me to use Settings-Region-Customize format-Decimal symbol to replace the comma with a dot (in Windows 11) and suddenly everything worked even without a reboot. A very ingenious bug! In the software world, however, the comma/dot problem is a never-ending story.

Same problem here. And the decimal symbol trick doesn’t work for me (Windows 11 Pro FR using Topaz Photo in englis)h.

I have the same problem. With Wonder 1, I have to use local processing instead of cloud processing to avoid the “error running the model”.

Are you also on Mac with a M2 Pro processor?

I have Windows 11 Pro, Intel i7, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070. Cloud processing is still faster for me. Local processing is OK, sometimes makes my computer fans run at max speed.

Hello, when will Remove 2 finally work on M1 macOS Tahoe 26.4? It can’t be Apple’s fault, otherwise it wouldn’t work on M2-M5 machines either. So it must be a Topaz issue. When will this finally be addressed?

Best regards from Vienna

Robert

Yeah, but I’m not English. I don’t use it often enough to bother switching my Windows to English just to do one or two renders with Recover V3.

I’m not of the US/UK nationality either.
I switched, though, to see, if results on other models would change - so far, only Recover v3 model is the one that ‘suffers’. On Windows 10, it wasn’t enough to just change the decimal character to [dot], and without reboot, it seems.

The only drawback is that the sound application, Breakaway, stopped having a functional configuration access (the bug is probably present because I licensed it on Polish locale setting). Oh well, gotta wait then!

I’ m getting the exact same message - tried to disable Virus/Firewall to no avail?

My (small) native language is not English either (and I don’t live in an English-speaking area). The eternal comma-dot duel not only accompanies me in general throughout my software life (including my user life – e.g. my bank requires commas from me). In Windows, I have the language and region set to English/US, but I need some things (including commas, kilometers, date format, time…) to be “non-English”. I rarely use Recover 3, so I solved it similarly to Harald – I don’t use it at all, because switching between commas/dots in Windows is not a matter of one mouse click. Topaz should solve this as quickly and definitively as possible (I remember that there were similar problems with this some time ago).

Perhaps users could manually set the dot/comma option in Topaz as their own option and thus separate it from the general setting in MS Windows? I have no idea.

Same problem here. Tried with the antivirus/firewall disabled. No solution.
Got a link for a new download, but the problem stays.

Same problem here … I guess we’ll have to wait a little for a bug fix in this update.

I’m on a MacBook Pro M2 MAX running MacOS Sequoia 15.7.3. I did download all models during the installation. Upon opening a TIFF image from Lightroom in Topaz Photo, the application is stuck in analyzing the photo… What is going on here? I just paid 50$ for a useless piece of software which I cannot use at all at the moment.
