Topaz Photo AI v3.3.1

Hello!

Today we have a patch release with AI powered upscaling for super focus when using focus boost, an huge speed improvement for super focus on Apple Silicon, and many bug fixes.

You can find the installer links and full changelog below.

AI upscaling in Super Focus

Using Focus Boost in Super Focus will downscale your image for processing and then upscale back to the original size. Previously, the upscale used non-AI methods.

Starting in 3.3.1, Focus Boost - Minor and Major settings now use AI upscaling models to process your image, creating a sharper result. We notice this especially when using Focus Boost - Major.

2x speed improvement for Super Focus on Apple Silicon

We know the importance of speed in running AI models, especially for Super Focus. Great news, we have doubled the processing speed for Super Focus on Apple Silicon so you can now preview and render in half the time.

Performance improvements are always happening from our team, we will have more to share soon!

v3.3.1

What is the current status of macs running Sequoia? I may be purchasing a new macbook pro and it will most surely have Big Redwood on it. I’d rather not have to downgrade to 3.2.

Just downloaded to my Imac and super focus will no longer work says not supported

Does your Mac have an AMD Radeon GPU? If so read the release notes for the version. Such as.

“Disabled super focus on Macs with AMD Radeon graphics cards for now. We are working on a long-term fix here.”

Just updated and started a CLI batch as a test and I get the following messages:

2024-10-31 23:49:52.7075160 [W:onnxruntime:, session_state.cc:1166 onnxruntime::VerifyEachNodeIsAssignedToAnEp] Some nodes were not assigned to the preferred execution providers which may or may not have an negative impact on performance. e.g. ORT explicitly assigns shape related ops to CPU to improve perf.

2024-10-31 23:49:52.7129157 [W:onnxruntime:, session_state.cc:1168 onnxruntime::VerifyEachNodeIsAssignedToAnEp] Rerunning with verbose output on a non-minimal build will show node assignments.

This didn’t occur with 3.3.0.

I’ve tried to set the AI processor to Auto, CPU and Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 but nothing is changing. The pictures are generated and seem to look ok.

Thanks - Yes I saw that after posting .

You absolutely need to render super focus just on the selected (masked) area. It will be so much faster. Right now it always computes super focus on the whole image even if the selected area is only 1% of the image

First play with the new build! Back on the Dell 3660 with 4090.

Off to a rough start with a 1MP digital image from over 20 years ago. It’s doing Gigapixel-like replacement of objects to make them look sharper:

This 1990’s film scan was a much more successful recovery:

With the addition of Face recovery:

Oops, trying to export, got the blank stare (this is happening frequently):

Cancelled, tried again, was very quick on the 4090:

Another 1990s film scan. I’ve never seen this image look so good!

Original at 100%:

Then 4X in “classic” Gigapixel on the Mac, which got it done without pain:

yes I agree 100%

Totally reviving my old 1990s film-based images! Super focus > Face recovery:

The bug that caused a crash when you had two sharpen enhancements applied, looks like it has been fixed.

Thanks!

(Tagging @ericc1001 because they have reported this bug as well)

Looking good except it gave the birds beak a feather texture and a few other problems. Guess I need to play with the settings a bit more.

Hmmm, I just redid a photo I had previously done with 3.3.0. Super Focus 3.3.0 did a pretty good job, but 3.3.1 has problems. The AI upscale now creates incorrect features that ruin the image. Also, some non-masked portions are getting sharpened and some parts of the masked portion are not sharpened. Seems like a big step backwards.

M2 Pro 12/19 Macbook Pro 32gb.

Edit: I have been playing around some more and using the preview windows to see what happens as I change settings. For the Focus boost I reset it to None, let it render, then set it back to Major. This time the weird, incorrect AI features that were added previously when using Major were not there. I suppose with AI you can get different results each time you run it. Very unpredictable. Maybe if I do it again I will get yet another image. Still getting unmasked portion sharpened.

System:

  • Win 11 Pro (desktop PC)
  • Processor = AMD RX6800 XT

Version:

  • PAI 3.3.1 (production)
  • Standalone & Attempted Ps 2024 Plugin (got Error Msg via File > Automate, got Error Msg + Crashed Ps 2024 using Filter menu) - Snip of Error Msg below.

Image:

  • Blurry 2012 .jpg of model (badly lit) on tradeshow floor (oddly they were demo’ing how great their studio lights were, and she was totally blown out - but that’s not relevant here)
  • Image Dimensions: 2736 x 3648 px (Camera = Canon Powershot S95)

Goal: Determine what I can sharpen using SuperFocus in current PAI.

  • Standalone Version Steps:
  • Clicked SuperFocus - selected Subject only (not background) - Female model, PAI selected her accurately w/out me having to modify.

  • Settings used: SuperFocus: Strength = Medium, Focus Boost = Minor

  • Previews/Preview Processing Bhvr: Two preview boxes were used. For both, the Blue Progress bar tracked to the processing time from left to right (didn’t wing immediately to the right and stay there - better than previous rel.).

  • Clicked Render: Got ETA 9 minutes. Again, Blue Progress bar tracked to processing spd from left to right and included a countdown of the time remaining (which helps vs wondering if anything’s happening). Actual time to process was 7 minutes.

  • Decided to see if Face Recovery could sharpen the face more. Ran it after SuperFocus completed. When looking at Before/After Face Recovery - became obvious that SuperFocus had altered the model’s mouth, nose, chin area significantly.

Face Recovery restored her appearance to how it was in the Orig. image (just clearer). Struck me as the moral equivalent to how text got mangled and required a 2nd Preserve Text step to ensure no alterations to text. ** Perhaps there should be a Disclaimer box in the UI to verify human features haven’t been changed (if not desired). I didn’t use any “Creative” settings to alter facial features.

  • Exited PAI Standalone. It did not relaunch itself.

  • Tried accessing PAI in Ps as a Plugin. Didn’t work. Got Error Msgs (see also notes above and snips below) and a crash.

Snips - labeled in filenames: (track to the Sequence noted above)

My whole post processing workflow is in Photoshop. Will PAI no longer be supported in Ps? It only produced Error Msgs and crashes.

Wonder if batch processing is fixed?

v3.3.0 “select all” seems broken: only the first image has settings applied and is exported, all other images in batch are not exported because the settings were not applied).

Also noticed in 3.3.0: preview has two horizontal bands dividing the image into 3 where the image pinches in (shrinks in aspect) while the rest stretches (toggle processing on/off to see the bands “jump”). Appears happen in preview only, not the final export, so more cosmetic (and confusing).

This thing with AI and hands/fingers… it’s interesting how it can get so messed up.

Here is a snip of a hand before processing with Superfocus:

After processing Superfocus. Sharpen strength low and Focus Boost Major:

Here I’m glad I remembered someone saying - months ago in an earlier thread - that preserve text can fix not just only text, so I added that to the hand:

Still not perfect, but… the sources aren’t that good to begin with (I’m back to my HTC Desire photos from 2011-2012).

On another note… why is it that - after exporting a processed photo - the focusing process have to run again after having closed the export window and returned to the main window?

Seems awfully inconvenient having to wait once more for the Superfocus module to do it’s thing if all I want to do (for example) is try another setting on modules applied after Superfocus?

Batch processing is OK for me on Windows 11.

After using the Face Recovery mode (version 3.3.0), strange freckles appear on faces. In reality, a person may not have them, but after processing they appear. Please fix this bug.

I forgot to respond to this message : Topaz Photo AI v3.3.0 - #37 by Lingyu @Lingyu and now that the thread is locked, I’ll reply here. I’m not sure if this is still relevant after the new update, as I haven’t had a chance to install it yet.

Here’s the process I followed:

  1. Drag an image into PAI
  2. Add the “upscale” and “recover faces” modules
  3. Export the image with a prefix
  4. Close the popup
  5. Remove the “recover faces” module, leaving just the “upscale” module
  6. Export the image again—but at this point, saving does nothing, no saving activity
    and this part
