Or you could like, if you already have a license extend it for a year for $79 (from $99) which would be a bit more than 10%
The 109 for a lifetime of Luminar Neo isn’t bad though… Are they changing product name again or about to launch a more mayor release that won’t be covered with those $109?
Topaz - Can you please point me to a table or similarly ‘easy to read’ resource that shows explicitly what new features have been added to incremental PhotoAI releases, but , critically, excludes such things as bug fixes and ‘interface improvements’.
Trying to assess what incremental value I’m getting if/when renewing, and every time I look the bulk I see is simply bug fixes and ‘interface’ , but perhaps I’m looking in the wrong place?
Luminar’s cost is less, but so is the output quality-!
Before I offer my examples, I will say that I am also “friends” with Skylum as well as other developers, so I have no reason to slag them off because of any favoritism toward Topaz. The results are the results, and each app is what it is.
Because Topaz currently focuses on specific image enhancements (and not artistic effects, which many others offer), I scoped my tests to 6X upscale comparisons.
Here is Photo AI with the cabin photo I showed earlier at 6X (both stone and wood areas):
So no matter the cost of the other apps or what additional features they offer, they cannot match Topaz for quality in this very important area of upscaling/restoration. Sure, the other apps can swap skies (for example, which I love doing), but when you have decades of old crap lo-res images due to using consumer-level digital cameras (or making film scans, or downloading web-quality images), you need Topaz apps to get anything close to usable results from them at larger sizes.
If anyone can show better examples of upscaling/restoration of distressed images from any other apps vs. Topaz, please do!
UPDATE:
Then of course you have Topaz’ advanced weapon, Gigapixel Recovery! These are the ultimate results (4X and 6X):
Some observations:
1- it is not certain that among the many users there are not many who do not need to use the upscale function which therefore cannot be the only value for comparison
2- TPAI is not a stable product at all unlike other apps on the market. Every two weeks is a gamble and problems highlighted a year ago have not yet been resolved
3- Based on the above, the market price seems absolutely inadequate to me: consider that in many countries a tax is applied which increases the price by approximately 20-25% (up to $250!). I don’t want to be wrong but it seems like double the cost of an annual subscription to Photoshop+Lightroom!
4- my humble opinion is that the market price of TPAI should not exceed $100 to have a good diffusion and goodwill of users towards some gaps
You write “not, not, do not, cannot” so I’m not sure of your point, except I think you are saying Upscale is not the Main Attraction for some people. That’s fine, but speaking for myself and my use cases, it’s far and away the most useful feature because it also handles denoising and sharpening.
Agreed, this has been a very ambitious project for a couple of years now. The original goal was to integration the product line into one app AND add autopilot. IMO the former should be perfected before the latter is even considered, as professionals will want full control anyway.
3/4) Re: Pricing. Perhaps until the universally acknowledged growing pains are fully resolved, the pricing and/or licensing terms should be more generous.
We are practically on the same page . Those who mainly use TPAI for upscaling are probably more than satisfied (except those who complain about the face recovery inherited from Gigapixel) and perhaps they would also be satisfied with the current Gigapixel, which also costs significantly less. But it seems to me that Topaz’s ambitions are for a wider audience and this is where the problem arises: if you give more functions they must work equally well otherwise you can only receive disaffection and criticism.
Face recovery is one of the most appreciated functions by those who, like me, restore old family photos in addition to new shots: however, as can also be seen from the forum, it has not progressed for at least a year (see hair management which is often partially fixed and partly not, the face seems to be treated inside a rectangle, what is outside is ignored with uncommentable results). What can I say, among the apps seen, Topaz’s face recovery is notable but with some strong limitations that are not resolved, I believe, to dedicate time and resources to functions that no one has asked for and is still asking for.
