[RESOLVED IN V3.5.2] - SQUARE GRID ARTIFACTS ON MAC - Click here if you get this

[Please describe your issue here. Try to include logs (Help → Logging) and add screenshots if necessary.]
When using Topaz Photo AI to remove noise I came across some structures that were introduced by that process (or at least I cannot make them appear before using denoising). The screenshot of the preview already shows it in the upper part of the right panel with the settings applied for preview.

It is hard to make out but once you see it it can’t be unseen. Look for slightly lighter horizontal lines in the sky. They are easier to spot if you take the screenshot and put a reversed S-curve on it:

It’s horizontal and vertical lines, the horizontal ones being a bit lighter, the vertical a bit darker than the surrounding areas. These structures only appear in the right side of the preview (i.e. in the one with the preview applied). It’s not a preview issue, as I discovered it on the further processing of the image.

Steps to reproduce issue:

  1. Step 1
Load image from CameraRAW to Photoshop. Invoke Photo AI.
  2. Step 2
    Select ‘Removing noise’
  3. Step 3
Look for the structure in preview window.

I am getting the grid using plug in and creating Tiff. So the issue is no just in RAW. And I cannot use the Raw Plug In as it changes the color of the image severely, and oversaturated the image to the point of a useless image. Any ideas? Thanks

Can you send us the file so we can try to reproduce this issue? What filter did you use on the image to get the grid pattern?

You can securely submit your image(s) to my Dropbox using the link below. Please be sure to send me a note to let me know you sent something.

Hello, as of 10/6 I am still experiencing the grid artifact in a specific work flow as follows:

  • Process original RAW (Sony A7rIII) in Capture One Pro then round trip to Photo AI 2.0.4 for noise reduction.
  • Then process the TIF file produced by Photo AI in Capture One with my go-to B&W app Silver FX Pro v.6.
  • In images with large uniform areas such, as cloud free sky, the sensor grid is immediately noticeable and more so as the area is darkened.
Note: If I reverse the sequence and go to Silver FX Pro first then to Photo AI the grid does not appear.

Are you using Mac or Windows? Could you send the Raw file and the TIF produced by Topaz Photo AI so I can try to reproduce this issue?

Try deactivating Neural Engine by turning off this switch:

Thanks for reply. But the grid still here.

Hi

I was experiencing grid-like artefacts too and updated to Photo AI 2.1.1. hoping it would fix this. Unfortunately, the problem seems somewhat worse with the new version.
I had trouble getting acceptable results with certain type images. I tested this with a dark 20% grey added with grain or noise - compression-like squares are clearly visible.

Standard mode is quite OK, but High Fidelity mode is not.
I tested both “Use Neural Engine” on and off - no significant difference.

This has been reported numerous times but still not fixed. Too much time rushing out the latest new development. They should stop and fix all the problems before developing new things. With so many updates, almost every week, it is getting like a dogs dinner. We are being used to beta test everything.

I’m still seeing the grid today with latest update. The grid is the result of the multi-threading as seen in all AI output… upscale, sharpen, noise. Adobe has figured this out. The toggle I need in the short time while you guys fix this is:

[ • ] Multi-threading

Denoise & Sharpen (not upscaled though Photos AI does add width and height)

After exporting a sharpened and denoised photo, the DNG file has some kind of big grid with slightly different colour.

Opened the photo from Lightroom Classic via the Topaz-Plugin.
First I thought it’s just a Display Error and closed both, Lightroom and Topaz but when I opened the DNG-File in Photoshop, the grid was still there.

Ist there a solution for this problem? I’M now using Topaz for about 1 month but never had this problem.

Let’s try updating you to the most recent version release to see if this resolves the issue.

Please make sure you’ve also turned off any firewall, VPN, or proxy that may be on your computer. These are known to block the installation. Also, make sure there are no settings or configurations in your OS system that could interfere.

Try using the appropriate OS system link to update:

Same here… Mosaic “tiles” visible on export to DNG.

I know this was a problem about 12 months ago, not certain if this is the same issue (did it ever get resolved?) or if it has come round again.

Using LrC
Select a CR2 RAW file
File >Plug in extras>Prices with Topaz Photo AI
Denoise with (RAW Normal) and sharpen (with Standard)
Save and return to LrC
The newly created DNG file has the “mosaic” tiles visible as does any exported .jpg etc
(increasing contrast slider really shows them up)

Using MacBook Pro M2 Max, 32GB, 12 Core, Sonoma 14.4

Hello John,

even after updating to V3.0 the problem with the grid still exists.
I found out, that the problem mostly appears on photos taken in foggy conditions and I think it has to do with RAW-Denoising because when I change the setting from normal to strong the grid is gone, but the results on strong denoising are not as good as the normal ones (except the grid of course).
I really hope that the software developers find a solution for this problem soon, because for a lot of my RAW images are not editable in Topaz.

Best regards
Roman

As of the latest update I am getting grid artifacts in various photos that have lots of blue sky in the background, but also other backgrounds too. Because I photograph birds these are quite numerous. I looked and saw this has been a consistent issue for at least a couple years. I wasted a lot of time processing and exporting photos only to find they don’t come out as previewed in the Autopilot. Very frustrating…I am unable to remove RAW DeNoise so I can’t change the order in which I process the photo. It happens when I use RAW DeNoise only and also when using the Sharpen feature additionally.
I checked back to the previous year of using topaz and couldn’t find a single instance of grid artifacts with any similar backgrounds or otherwise in my collection. I’m using RAW photos and not interested in a work around that involves converting them to other formats. I shoot with a Canon R5 and I have a Mac Studio w Monterey 12.7.1 I attached a couple of examples. Thanks.

I’m seeing squares when I have smooth areas. Even with all the updates I still see them. I’d say half to 3/4 of the images are useless. I’m running Topaz Photo AI on a Mac Studio with a M1 chip. I’m using the program within Capture One pro.
