I’m getting very poor results upscaling large raster video in TVAI 4 compared to version 3. Here are a couple examples. The same 4K source is upscaled to 8K using Artemis in both apps. The output of v3 is noticeably sharper than the output of v4. I’ve experimented with every Artemis model in v4 at all quality levels and nothing gives me the sharp output I was getting with v3. What’s going on? Is this a bug? Any advice much appreciated. Thanks!
I would suggest trying again Artemis HQ v12 but turn recover detail down to 0 and set your output codec to ProRes LT. That’s a closer match to the settings you show in TVAI 3.
Also try looking at the preview in an external player as a sanity check.
I tried those settings and frankly, I don’t see any difference between the 4K source on the left and the 8K upscale on the right.
I get much better results in v3. I’m glad I still have a copy on an older startup drive. As far as I can tell, TVAI v4 is broken for this use case and I’m concerned that it may be broken in other situations with large raster source as well.
Anyone at Topaz care to comment on what’s going on? Thanks!
First: Why is that video 4k at all? It seems really bad quality with details more like a 640x480 resolution source…
Did anyone simply enlarge it before without knowing what he was doing?
For such material it sometimes is better to actually downsize it before until the resolution halfway matches the details and only after that upscale it with some enhancement model. Maybe you’ll get better results and at a much lower file size / better compatibility with playback devices.
No sense in just blowing up the resolution to 8k with such a blocky video…
Believe me, I know exactly what I’m doing. The source video is stereoscopic VR video with a full resolution of 4096 x 4096. The reason it appears blocky in the TVAI v3 screen grab is because it’s being viewed at a 300% magnification factor. Please note that the 8K upscale is crystal clear and sharp as would be expected. Also note that in the TVAI v4 screen grab, neither source or upscale are as blocky, and they both look equally soft. Upscaling in v4 does not create the detail and sharpness that is obvious in v3.
This looks like a bug. Can anyone else confirm with large raster video?
give us a sample source to test then.
Here you go:
ProRes 4K x 4K source:
ProRes LT 8K x 8K output from TVAI v3
I invite anyone to please demonstrate a setting in TVAI v4 that looks anywhere near as good.
