Am I right in thinking ‘upscaling’ just makes the image bigger (eg more pixels)? So, if I’m happy with the image size, and unless I want to print/display a much larger version, there is no point my Upscaling my images?

Also, Upscaling does its best to interpolate new pixels to make the image larger, but thereby can also actually lower the image quality? Again reinforcing there’s no point in Upscaling an image unless it’s too small for your purposes. Is that correct?

My 2nd question is, when I was using Upscaling for my first few TAI edits, it would save it back to Apple Photos as a jpg. It took a while, but worked eventually.

Now I’ve stopped using the upscaler, it tries to save to Photos as a DNG file, so far with a 100% fail rate. It just takes forever, and never completes. Yesterday I went out for a walk for several hours and left it saving the file, only to come back to a crashed laptop.

I’m trying again now, we’ll see what happens, but if it still doesn’t save what can I do about it?

7 hours later…my machine hasn’t crashed, but it’s still trying to save!!

Ok, so turns out Apple Photos can’t save. DNG file back to it…(so why is TAI trying?).

I’ve also realised you can ‘upscale’ at 1x (so I presume not making the image bigger) so I’m trying that again now and hopefully when it’s down I’ll be able to save as a jpg again

I have merged posts about this Apple Photos issue here. Make sure to check my top original post above !

Topaz Photo AI [v1.x.x] on [Mac]

@guaranro-130821 please see top post for troubleshooting steps on this!

After importing a Sony raw photo (.arw) into Photo AI 3.4.2 using the Topaz plug-in for Apple Photos, my intent is to only raw de-noise and sharpen the photo. This process produces a dng file for export back to Apple Photos. The dng processing hangs, and a file is never created for saving in Apple Photos. This bug existed in previous versions of Photo AI, and any resolution that was suggested did not resolve the bug. My last bug submission for this issue was September 8.

Once I add a lighting enhancement to the above workflow, the file is exported as a TIFF (as expected), and the processing works properly, and the TIFF is able to be saved back to Apple Photos. This is a workaround, and is not my preferred workflow. My preferred resolution is allow the user the ability to export as a TIFF or DNG, no matter how many enhancements are used.

Steps to reproduce issue:

  1. Import Sony arw file from Apple Photos on Mac (up to date Sonoma) to Photo AI 3.4.2 using Topaz plug-in.
  2. Auto-enhancements applied to photo (RAW de-noise and subject sharpening).
  3. Hit “Export to Apple Photos” button
  4. Processes Export ARW-dng and hangs with no resolution.

Sane problem with Canon CR3.

I am having this issue but with just JPG’s all around, editing via the Photos extension and then saving back won’t work on certain photos.

This is a looooooong standing problem. In fact for such a long time without any progress that I think Topaz are simply unable to solve it or just have given up on this…

See e.g. here

(Also with an ugly workaround included in the thread).
With photos taken with devices running iOS 18 there’s another bug leading to the fact that you cannot even import the photos into TPAI at all, so it’s quite totally broken now.

Thanks but this is happening with just JPG as input files not dng’s. I have also found that Topaz Photo AI Photos plugin is just completely unable to edit HEIC’s, returning an error about too many references when trying to save back to the library.

The only way I have found to kind of work around the jpg issue is to crop the photo slightly, but 2 out of 5 times that just leads to a crash instead of being able to edit using the plugin.

I believe my workaround for this bug is better…

And, as it’s 100% reproducible I’d really really like to see the fix promised over a year ago.

The rotation workaround is mentioned in the “MY IMAGE GETS STUCK!” in my post. There is a development team ticket opened on this and when the issue is found, I will reply here. Tickets are tackled in priority of users affected, and Apple Photos, since it does not have ability to return a DNG and cannot do batch processing is not a popular editor to use with Photo AI. Once a resolution is found and released, we will post here. The rotation workaround, yes, will fix any stuck behavior

For your JPEGS, make sure to test the 90 degrees rotation in Apple Photos prior to using the plugin, and let me know if your files go through. Make sure to also test that the standalone works. Until the standalone works, the plugin will not.

For your HEIC files, were they shot on iOS 18? If so, see this: [HEIC files from iOS 18 Error] - Click here if you get "Cannot load .heic file" error when editing HEIC files - #4 by jo.vo

My workaround is not to rotate the image before sending to TPAI and then rotating it back afterwards but ANY edit you apply to the original in Apple Photos before sending the image to TPAI will do, e.g. a slight crop by only few pixels. After that landscape oriented photos of higher resolution will work.

If other users prefer this, perfect! However it would make that file different size compared to all others in collection! Good input for you and for others, if that does not change anything for your workflow/needs!

Hi, lately it seems that even after rotating the files it doesn’t work. Seems there are two issues at play here, for me. #1 is Apple Photos hanging when selecting Edit with PhotoAI (plugin), and the #2 is being able to save back after using the plugin.

Lately #1 is cropping up more and more and rotating/editing the file in Apple Photos beforehand doesn’t seem to help at all.

I tested on the JPG without using Apple Photos (i.e. directly) and it works fine, so it’s something with the plugin I suspect.

@redwingfalcon - can you write an email to support@topazlabs.com for this? We can open a support ticket and troubleshoot with you to identify what is happening!
