Can we get the ability to install Version 6 side by side with Version 7? I downloaded the 6.2.0 installer and pointed the installation to “C:\Program Files\Topaz Labs LLC\Topaz Video AI6” instead of the default location (notice the 6 at the end of the path). But it still deleted version 7.0 in the old path “C:\Program Files\Topaz Labs LLC\Topaz Video AI”.
Unfortunately, it’s generally agreed that none of those versions are stable for Game Ready drivers. I know Studio drivers are recommended, but if I’m rendering for multiple days, I’d like to be able to pause and play a game without having to reboot for driver changes.
This is from the reddit/nvidia group:
Drivers generally considered stable/consistent by the community include 537.58, 551.86, 552.22, 561.09. Other drivers worth trying despite system specific issues include 536.99, 546.17, 552.44, 560.81, 560.94, 566.14 - NOTEs: drivers before 572.16 have security issues. Currently, 572.16 is the only driver to officially support 5080/5090 GPUs
That Currently note is a bit stale, as there are newer drivers, but none of them are recommended by the community except for 5080s.
The ask here is to let us install both side by side. So that I can enjoy Starlight mini without having to reinstall Topaz all the time. Because, oddly, Starlight mini doesn’t have this Nvidia Video Codec 13 requirement, but with Topaz Video AI 7.0 the old models I used all the time (like Dione TV) suddenly does require an update.
Thanks,
Joe.
Ju must rename folder before install other Version, otherweise new installation can override.
Rename existing “Topaz Video AI6” to for example “TVAI 7.0” because it is V7 and make new shortcut of the Exe to your desktop, and name shortlink as TVAI 7.0
Download V6, in the installation wizard change the default directory to for example “TVAI 6.[Version you choose]” same here create/rename desktop shortcut pointing to this exe
Seems like you didn’t read my post. I specifically mentioned that I changed the folder location when installing already. It doesn’t matter what folder I choose for installation; the other version gets removed.
The installers are set up to install to the same areas and ProgramData folders for use on the system, which get overwritten when a different version of the app is installed. Some users have been able to find ways of installing on separate drivers or renaming some folders and file paths but it is not recommended as this can cause issues with the app.
There has been a request for the team to look into options to allow this in the future but I have not seen that progress at this time.
We do recommend Studio Drivers as they are more stable when running the app and the AI models.
Hi, I must agree with @worldjoe - this should absolutely be possible if updates keep being rolled out that break things for many users.
I basically have the same issues as joe but with Nvidia Studio drivers - they are basically unusable for production since about a year ago. Every single one I tried since then, I had to roll back to an earlier version due to Adobe software breaking and other issues on my 4090.
I also find that VAI 7 is able to render Starlight Mini on my current driver 565.90 (although it takes 27 minutes to load the model!), but it does not render any other models.
Therefore I have to roll back to VAI 6 and hope some fix made for VAI 7 - or a way to install both at the same time just for using Starlight Mini locally.
Unfortunately I have lost a lot of time yesterday and today trying to figure this out.
Let’s define the idea clearly:
Change All versions of TVAI to use their own version folders within the ProgramData folder. Change anything else that conflicts with users installing and running different versions on the same machine.
Thanks. This worked. I installed them side by side. As you say, the trick was to rename to installed folder first, instead of simply picking a new location to install.
fine it works take care when the programData folder is the same, then you get for all installations same model downloads and sharing some settings.
For example when you have active rendering and open the other TVAI Version then there it also trys to render the same^^ Same ProgramData folder does work but is difficult, ,beware some effects can happen. If you like complete standalone installations then also give dedicated ProgramData TVAI folders but then you have to download models for each installed version
Ok. Now I see why this is a bad idea. I just did an uninstall of my side by side installation and reinstall of Topaz 7 and my starlight mini render estimate for the same movie with the same settings went from 14 days to 4 days.
So yeah, “some effects” might include 3x slower render speeds. Yowsa.
While I appreciate the workaround, I can see why it’s no solution. So I’ve unmarked the solution for this.
Then set also different model folders then this shouldn’t happen. I have two installed without problems. You can set the name of model folder also during the setup. Or you can use a beta version for V6 and the V7 final. This is the easy way because beta is always a dedicated installation and does not affect final. But in all cases, do not open both versions at the same time and starting renderings
