Gigapixel v8.2.0

Hello everyone!

Today we’re excited to announce another major update to Gigapixel with improvements for the Redefine model, Cloud Rendering, and more.

So what’s new?

  • You can now Upscale images based on their longest side. Select multiple images to see this new option when upscaling. You asked for this, and we’re happy to bring it to Gigapixel.

  • Vastly improved high creativity Redefine Cloud Rendering results when rendering without a prompt. Our updated cloud rendering system will guide the generation to prevent artifacts.

  • Sending images one-by-one to the cloud queue is a thing of the past. Batch processing multiple images at once with Cloud Rendering is now possible with this version of Gigapixel.

  • The amazing Redefine model is now 2x faster on Mac and you’ll also notice that the text prompt now works much more consistently than ever before. If you’re on Mac OS 13 or earlier, make sure to update to the latest MacOS 14 or 15 to use this model.

And there is even more to this update under the hood including quality of life improvements for cloud rendering, UX fixes, and bug fixes. Keep reading to learn more.

Oh - and please stay tuned for more from Gigapixel. We do have some exciting updates planned.

You can find the installer links and the full changelog below for this version of Gigapixel. For any issues, make sure to send us an email to support@topazlabs.com

v8.2.0
Released February 5th, 2025
Windows: Download
Mac: Download

Upscale by Longest Side

You can now upscale images based on their longest side, which has been long-requested especially by those those who print their images or who deal with varying sizes due to mixed sources, different aspect ratios, and cropping.

Previously, images with varying dimensions would need dimensions set individually or to process them in individual batches.

To use use upscale by the longest side, select multiple images and set the size in pixels, inches, or centimeters. The application will automatically handle the scaling for selected images.

Screenshot 2025-01-16 at 4.50.56 PM

If you want to automate your process further, you can open the Preferences > Upscale and resize menu to set a default pixel size for the longest side and save your settings. Every image imported will be upscaled to that default.

2x Faster Redefine on Mac + Prompt Fixes

We’re excited to announce a 2x speed improvement for the Redefine generative AI model on Mac. You can now achieve the same high-quality results in much less time, allowing for faster results and a more efficient workflow. Whether you’re processing single images or tackling large projects, you can now bring your creative visions to life faster than before.

Note that the first render will be slow due to loading the updated model. Subsequent renders should be significantly faster the speed.

This improvement unfortunately required us to disable Redefine local processing on macOS 13 (Ventura). Please update your macOS to 14 or 15 to use this model for local processing.

Redefine also now correctly uses text prompts when processing your images on Mac. Especially for high creativity, Redefine can create interesting details but lose the original context of the image. Add a text prompt in the advanced settings to guide the output to your preference, like putting up guardrails for the model to work with.

Batch Processing with Cloud Rendering

Processing multiple images in the cloud just got a whole lot easier! Previously, cloud rendering required selecting settings and clicking render for each image individually, making batch processing tedious and time-consuming. With batch cloud rendering you no longer need to queue images one by one for processing. You can upload multiple images at once and process them seamlessly in a batch.

To use the feature import multiple images and select settings for each. With multiple images selected for processing, the cloud render button will automatically update to show credit cost and a time estimate for processing all images selected.

Batch Cloud Rendering helps you get more done in less time, making it easier than ever to take advantage of cloud processing for large projects. Try it out and let us know what you think!

Better Redefine with High Creativity in the Cloud

We’ve enhanced the Redefine model to deliver even better results when processing in the cloud. This update creates higher-quality and more faithful outputs to your starting image automatically.

Especially at higher creativity levels, Redefine can produce very creative but less accurate results. In cloud rendering, we are able to direct the model to maintain the original content while adding new details. This improvement makes it easier to achieve consistent, high detail results for your projects.

Here is the original image of a dragon on a castle. A great candidate for using Redefine to add more detail to the image.

With the previous cloud processing at higher creativity (4 or higher) Redefine generates many details and loses the original context of the image, shifting the dragon into a different creature and generally losing the spirit of the original image. This image was processed at 2x with creativity 6.

Our improved cloud processing with the same settings creates a higher quality output that is far more accurate to the original image. The dragon is very recognizable and more detailed, the colors are much closer to the original. Same settings, 2x at creativity 6.

Improved results for Redefine is enabled by default for cloud render. You may toggle the setting in the Preferences > Cloud Render menu under Auto-guidance for Redefine.

Please try the cloud render and let us know about your results.

Cloud Queue File Naming and Processing Settings

We have further improvements for the cloud render experience. The cloud queue will now show settings used to process each image in a info tooltip below the file name.

Downloaded cloud queue images now reflect the model and upscale amount used for that file for easy organization.

Default Download Location in Cloud Render

Finding and organizing cloud rendered images just got easier! You can now select a default download location for your images in the cloud render queue, so they are downloaded and easily located once processing is complete.

To set your default download location, go to the Cloud Queue > Settings, or open the Preferences > Cloud render menu.

Suggestion to @dakota.wixom (scratched my head a bit about that one)…

If the two last items in the changelog is about centimeters, maybe just change for example the last one to “…country uses the Metric System.”
(Would be easier to understand if you ask me)

I tried to improve another photo from ancient times (same source, photo of photo – don’t worry, I’m not there this time :slightly_smiling_face:). I don’t know from what distant time, maybe more than 100 years, supposedly some common relatives within the family tree. I was interested in heads and hair again.

In step 1, I had to cut it out of the original photo that had about 5 photos laid out on a table and taken with a mobile phone. Then rotate it so that the photo was vertical.

In step 2, remove scratches and clean it up a bit using object removal. All this was done in another photo editor.

In step 3, I submitted the photo to Gigapixel (already v. 8.2.0, since it’s now available). I used Redefine at level 1, 1x magnification, as recommended. Pretty nice hair appeared and even the faces were improved (I didn’t use Face enhancement here). Good work of Gigapixel! However…

In step 4, I just added 4x magnification to the same method and also Face enhancement – Creative method). On the white wall in the background, there were ugly artifacts (a bug/feature that has been going on for many versions of Gigapixel) and in addition (e.g. in the bottom right) some kind of hair or something (fortunately without Topaz Tigers and their fur). Something should really be done with those furs (ugly artifacts), it spoils the result quite a lot.

I like the result of step 3 the most:

Then maybe do an enlargement with denoise activated in photo AI from the image output in step 3. And smooth the background to correct any redundant artefacts. You can also set the entire image to greyscale to correct the yellowing effect of time on certain areas of the image.

the Redefine model stopped working in the version before this one. This was not fixed in this version.
It just previews and exports completely grey images.
I hat to downgrade to an earlier version.

I read in a forum, that this is a problem wir m3 Macs.
I am on a m3 Mac MacBook.

Please fix this, since this I my most used model and this version of Gigapixel is unusable for me.
I think I paid for upgrades over the next year. But only if they are working!

redefine still broken on my mac studio, all results blurred

I guess there still isn’t any implementation of RTX 50-series.
Ran a 4k (16:9) picture with Redefine at 2x Upscale and 6 creativity → 8k output.
Estimated cloud render: 2min43s.
Estimated local export: 3h07min

Actual export time: 3min20s

Do i understand this correct? Better creativity ONLY applies to cloud rendering? If that is actually true, why would you not make the model better for local exports too? We’ve paid for this software and continue to do so at a yearly basis.

Original:

Creativity 6, texture 4 - Prompt: “Vivid magic in a church”

Creativity 6, texture 3 - NO prompt

The picture with lower texture but no prompt creates waaaaay more texture and non-relevant modifications.

Edit* They’re all automatically downscaled to 1920x1080p when uploading pictures. Original and redefined are 3840x2160 and 7680x4320 respectively.

after much trial and error, and restarting the program it started working.
but why?

Thanks for this - there are still some outstanding issues with certain Mac machines we are working with Apple to resolve. I wish I had a better answer here. Which machine are you on?

Good question! The enhanced creativity control for cloud renders can be replicated by adding a guiding prompt when rendering locally. Right now we don’t return those prompts back, but that is how it works behind the scenes. You can try using AI tools to generate similar prompts and test those effects. Let me know if you find a pattern that works well for you!

As already stated in the Beta thread this is not true for at least some faster high core count Macs.
e.g. Redefine on my low res testimage takes 2m 54s in Gigapixel 8.0.2 but 4m 04s in this new GP 8.2.0.

(left:GP 8.0.2, right: GP 8.2.0)

So, instead of the promised 2x speed gain it’s taking 40% longer! :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Interesting.

In other words, you feed the original picture to an LLM, i assume? With a prompt along the lines “Describe this picture with x amount of words.”.

The “longest size based upscale” may be useful to some but why not consider setting the size on the basis of megapixels? I have stuff that I usually want to upscale to 9 megapixels and I have repeatedly asked for such a setting but I was never replied to. This really should not be a hard thing to do. Is there any hope for an implementation?

Just tried it with Gemini Advanced 2.0 Pro Experimental. It described a picture better than i could.
Prompt:
Describe what you see in this picture with max 10 words. Try to be as specific as possible. Does not need to be a sentence.
Input picture:

Answer:
Wooden ladder-like path leading into dark, misty, wet forest.
Result 5 creativity, 3 texture:

Result with same prompt but 6 creativity, 4 texture:
