Education | Using Photo AI And Photoshop Smart Filters

I started using version 3.4.4 with Photoshop 26.2.0. Topaz AI has become almost completely useless as a smart filter. While I can apply the filter initially, if I do anything to go back and change the filter it does not recognize any of the adjustments that were made with the filter. If I try to crop after applying the Topaz AI filter it puts me in a loop in which it says no filter was applied. If I try to export back to photoshop, it doesn’t reapply the original filter. Using it as a smart filter has always been twitchy, but now it really is unusable.

Hi.

Although, Smart Objects / Filters work with Topaz Photo AI they are not officially supported

Thanks for your answer, but it really doesn’t make any sense. Why is Topaz AI listed in the filter menu in PS. Moreover, Topaz AI does work on smart object layers and is listed under the smart object layer as a Smart Filter in the layers panel. Obviously, PS thinks it’s a smart filter. And when the Topaz AI smart filter is double clicked, Topaz AI comes up with my adjustments listed, but when they are opened they don’t have my original settings. I may be wrong but I thought I remembered a time when it did remember my settings???

After playing around with using Topaz AI as a smart filter I have found that its behavior is pretty hit or miss. If I apply it as a smart filter and make adjustments, when I try to change adjustments by double-clicking on the smart filter, sometimes it will come up with the adjustments listed and the settings I applied. However I can double-click the filter again and it can come up with the adjustments listed, but not the correct settings. And I can double-click again and the adjustments may not show up at all. As I said, hit or miss.

Hi.

My apologies for the late reply it was bedtime for me and I was wrong and you were correct, I hadn’t checked before I answered if Photo AI works as a Smart Filter now

Because, I was going by past experience using Photo AI as a Smart Filter.

Previously I was getting the same results as yourself and had given up on the idea of using Smart Filters

The only difference I get now when I reopen the Smart Object is that a box appears asking me “Are you sure you want to apply Autopilot” I click on Cancel and all my previous settings remain in place

The only thing now is that I just can’t get it to break it works every time for me, the Smart Object loads with my previous settings even if change, add or remove enhancements

Things I’ve tried:
Smart Filter - works
Smart Object - works, although their the same
Converting the Background Layer to a Smart Object - works
Sending image from Lightroom both Edit in, sending as a Layer then converting as a Smart Filter works and using Edit in and sending the image as a Smart Object

As I say I can’t get this to break now works every time

I will endeavour to keep playing investigating
