Again and again I am disappointed by AI for photos. It’s the same disappointment across the board, not only with Topaz apps. Faces are altered in spite of being sharpened or whatever.
Today I tried Topaz Dust&Scratches first time on a scanned BW photo of mine. First time I used onboard processing, so it found around 60% of all scratches and dust, 40% not. But what’s even worse is, you can not use the brush for the 40% rest, cause every time you click on a dust eg, it also alters the whole area where the round brush was over to something very, very different. So the grain of my BW photo was every single time altered to something else, everyone can see easily. So the brush for the rest of 60% was totally unusable.
After that I bought my first credits to use the Topaz AI on their computers, practically the same. Maybe 70% were now found, the biggest scratches and dust points still there, and the brush for the rest of 30%, also again totally unusable.
So I bought a few months ago another year of updates of Photo AI for nothing. :(((((
Yes in spite of Topaz kicking off the Dust & Scratches model they then seem to have dropped the ball.
The plethora of free and paid apps that have sprung up do a vastly better job at removing the actual spots, dust and scratches but many of them really distort original detail and don’t come close to restoring the original - they produce a nicely sharpened artistic interpretation of the original.
For many that is just fine but for true restoration and image archival doesn’t cut it !

I have seen many very good results with that tool. However, it doesn’t always work, and our development team is still working on that tool to improve it. It’s still in beta.
There will be a new version of the tool soon. I tested a few image that didn’t have good results and it was way better.
Please share examples of the bad results here so our team can see what needs to be improved

Got new update today 12-21-25. Dust and Scratch now takes forever to complete on my machine. Granted its a large immage but they took about 60 sec before, now they get stuck 5 min in.
How large of an image in pixels? Alsoo make sure your AI Processor in Edit, Preferences, General is set to AUTO, this will use you full machine capabilities, do not be on any other option then Auto. Let us know how it goes!
