If I create a subject mask for a filter like “sharpen” the newly created mask only applies in that filter, so if then go in and try denoise subject I have to edit the subject mask again. Why don’t the changes made to define the subject in the image carry across different filters?

I concur. It’s to spend time to mask an intricate subjuct, only to do it again when a different filter is applied. One mask should be good across the filters, or at least be an option as there are cases when you may not want the same mask
