Best settings for upscaling anime from 720p to 1440p

Hello, I’ve been upscaling anime for a few years now, but I’ve recently noticed that you can get a lot more out of Topaz these days. I’ve always used Proteus with custom settings. I’ve been told several times to try using Iris. So, the question is, does anyone have good settings for Iris or perhaps for Proteus for Anime Clips/Videos?

Lately, I’ve even had some minor issues with Proteus, especially in dark areas, where they just start to flicker.

Iris is meant to try and find human faces, then enhance them. You’ll probably get bad looking results with Iris.
If you haven’t tried the Gaia models, try them.
Otherwise, You’re Proteus settings look good except Anti-alias/Deblur. -80 seems to be the magic spot for the movies I’ve done.

For a while, I was leaning towards realCugan for anime/animation, but I recently noticed that Iris does a better job with detail preservation and detail enhancement than Cugan. And, as @kazuviking has noted, it also handles interlacing well. Cugan is great to use if the source file has no artifacts, but Iris does a better job of keeping the video sharp and preserving details while also removing artifacts. If you’re not sure where to start, you can always use Estimate as a baseline to see what the model thinks of your file, and then go from there.

This is a file that was converted from analog to digital 360p and then upscaled to 4320p. Here is the Cugan version (one pass):

And the Iris version (one pass):

Iris and Cugan together (first pass Cugan, second Iris):

I did not upsacle because i wanted to preserve the original quality but if the show is interlaced then you need to de-interlace first and then upsacle. This caused me some headaches before. Here i compared Iris and Dione and Iris is way sharper on text and no jagged artifacts like Dione. Even with youtube compression its very noticeable.

Hi, @ryan.gallagher – you sent me a DM, but I decided to reply to you in the thread. Yes, I upscaled the entire series. I’ve also done a few others. Here is a sample at 8K/60fps.

(The streamed version is reduced to 1080/30fps. You’ll have to download for the full version. Youtube can playback at 4K/60fps if it’s not blocked in your region.)

The series was re-released at 1080p, but the new version is:
A) a complete redub, and
B) a copy of the Japanese version

I prefer the North American version that was originally shown on TV.
