I use Proteus for working on dvd video 720x480 interlaced and upscale in 2x…
After a lot of test I use manual with fix compression at 50, reduce noise at 20, dehalo 20 or 15 and antialias/deblur -50 (and recover detail to 0)
But I still don’t understand the value for sharpen and improve detail
A value for Improve detail need to be under (and near) fix compression?
A value for Sharpen need to be under improve detail?
I use for Improve detail 40 and sharpen 30…too much?
Sharpen make edges fine and sharp, instead of being blured
Improve detail recover some texture of color gradiant.
To me by reading your settings your push to high compression recover.
For a good start you should do Relative to auto
On all models Add noise to 1 recover detail to 20
AA 0 Dehalo 0
Then adjust param with +20 / -20
Then you tune Dehalo AA, and push Improve detail and Sharpening until the model turns nut
DNR is too much, it will smooth everything
After having done all of this on a frame, pick up typical other scen to validate it (some enlighted, dark, fast moves, 2 plans, aso)
Leave FPS as original for testing purpose, you’ll save time
One thing after another. The “All in one approach” is not at all the good one
Compression :
Either h.264 or h.265 create macroblock when compressing much. you can see them on dark gradiant and moreover if CBR or VBR has been used, contratry to CRF
Improve Detail :
The scene has some details, noticiably edge or vectors tahre are detected, it process a deblur on it by AI
Sharpen :
Everything that is a strait line by a way or another is sharpened and aliased, to make it sharp instead of blury
Lately I discovered that Upscaling x2 using Proteus v4 works pretty well, with the settings of: “Manual Mode”, Fix Compression=40, Improve Details=40, the rest I leave at “0” (Example ), that works well if your video is noisy.
Another settings I found works pretty good for me for x2 Upscale with Proteus v4, is: “Relative to Auto”, Dehalo= “-100”, the rest at “0” (example )
Denoising usually removes details so I am inclined not using it. Dehalo adds layer of blur so I try and avoid using it either.
if you do not use dehalo, you can bump down sharpening and deblur. also i noticed the higher the improve details, more sharp it is. so it’s like a sharpening value as well.
Some of my videos come out very well with the settings of: “Manual Mode”, Fix Compression=50, Improve Details=70, the rest I leave at “0”. very sharp and clear image results.
