Upscaling old DVDs to 4K (SciFi & Star Trek)

WOW! 8 hrs. You really are chasing perfection. That’s around 1,400 hrs just for Voyager boxset. An episode a day would be around 5 months of encoding. Crazy. I hope you have a good source of power. You wouldn’t want to get to 95% of an episode and have a power failure. To be honest and no offence but the difference between our images is very little in my opinion. However 1.5 vs 8 hrs is huge. Is it worth it for something that you’ll never be happy with? Trust me it doesn’t matter how good you get it, when you watch it you’ll always be nitpicking something. Remember that you are creating detail that was never there in the first place.

Here’s how some of those shots would look with my current method.

It does take a long time but the results look really good. Better in motion than a screen cap would suggest.

Cool. Glad you’re getting great results. Happy rendering. Oh and you’ll probably have to do some overtime at work to pay for the extra power usage. Mine went up heaps. Was running the pc 24/7.

Random note: While I’m still running my computer almost constantly on these upscales, I actually just sat down to watch a full episode (Starship Down from DS9 s4). It was such a nice experience. Sometimes with all the settings and exporting, you can forget to actually enjoy the final product.

That’s certainly true. I watched some of my upscales recently (three episodes) and some of them had very little cgi/vfx and background/far distance shots, so the upscaler did a good job and it almost felt organic. It was also nice when a family member walked in on me watching and asked if Paramount actually did a HD-update on it, because she came in from her tv, watching it on streaming and spotted the difference

Why was she watching them on streaming when you have them upscaled? I bet she’s watching your upscaled ones now though hehe. Agreed watching them upscaled does give a certain amount of satisfaction and makes it all worth it. Much more pleasurable to watch. With Star Trek being so popular I’m surprised Paramount hasn’t upscaled them yet. (hmmm
 Maybe I’ll do Stargate next.)
