Upscale old Videogame cutscene PS1/PS2

hi

Do you know how to do a decent upscale of old video game cutscenes for PS1/PS2/PS3? I follow the YouTube channel called (Upscale) and I must say that it has some fantastic videos. I would like to be able to master in Full HD at least cutscenes from video games like Parasite Eve, the various Final Fantasy games, and many others. Can you tell me the procedure to follow step by step? Do you know of any pre-configured presets? I have tried everything but I am not satisfied with the result.

Topaz version 4.0.6

Thanks

We would need a sample of the videos you have in mind to really be able to help.
I’ve done some video game upscales and they turned out pretty good.
Because videos for games are usually computer generated, you don’t have to worry about noise and grain. This means Proteus manual can do a great job. Set Anti-alias/ Deblur to -80. Leave denoise and dehalo at 0. Slowly (10 at the most) adjust the other settings one by one and see how it changes things.
You’re probably not going to get great results going more than 2X upscale.

these are the details for an example of a ps1 video

  • Codec: Motion JPEG Video (MJPG)
  • Type: Video
  • Video resolution: 320x160 pixels
  • Buffer dimensions: 320x160 pixels
  • Frame rate: 12.5 frames per second
  • Decoded format: Planar 4:2:0 YUV full scale
  • Orientation: Top-left
  • Color space: ITU-R BT.601 range
  • Color saturation level: Centered

could you give me an optimal setting? Is it possible to bring it to Full HD?

Being that small, makes it more likely that going all the way to FHD, will come with super obvious artifacts.
Here’s that image copied 30 times and ran through Proteus 50 compression, 22 detail, 5 sharpen, -80 anti-alias and 0 the rest at x2 upscale. Then x2 upscale with Gaia CG.

You can try different things, but this is where I would start. Generally if you’re using the same model, doing two passes will look the same as if you do it in one pass. Like doing to x2 upscales as opposed to 1 x4 upscale. Using different models, it’s different.

Artemis HQ in many cases yields very good results upscaling CG footage. you might want to give it a try.
