Two usability improvements for project loading and preset management

1. Optional Project Selection on Startup

Current behavior:
When launching Topaz Video AI, the application automatically loads the most recent project from the previous session. This can be convenient in some cases, but it becomes problematic when working on multiple projects simultaneously.

Issue:
Some projects contain large timelines, numerous clips, or heavy processing settings. Automatically loading the last project can significantly slow down startup time. In workflows where several projects are being handled at once, users often need to switch to a different project immediately after launch, which means waiting for an unnecessary load.

Requested improvement:
Add an optional startup dialog or preference setting such as:

  • “Open last project automatically” (current behavior)

  • “Show recent projects on startup”

  • “Start with an empty workspace”

This would allow users to choose which recent project to open, or start fresh, without waiting for a large project to load unnecessarily.

2. Ability to Edit Custom Presets After Creation

Current behavior:
Once a custom preset is saved, its parameters cannot be edited. To modify a preset, users must:

  1. Create a new preset with the updated settings

  2. Delete the old preset manually

This is time‑consuming and discourages iterative refinement of presets.

Issue:
Advanced users often fine‑tune their presets over time. The inability to edit existing presets makes preset management cumbersome and leads to unnecessary duplication.

Requested improvement:
Enable direct editing of custom presets.
For example:

  • Right‑click → “Edit preset”

  • Or an “Edit” button inside the preset management window

  • Or allow overwriting an existing preset when saving new settings

This would streamline workflows and make preset management more intuitive and efficient.

Summary

These two improvements would greatly enhance usability for professional and multi‑project workflows:

  1. Startup project selection to avoid long loading times and improve multi‑project handling.

  2. Editable custom presets to allow iterative refinement without duplication.

Both changes would make Topaz Video AI more flexible, more efficient, and more comfortable for users who work with complex or numerous projects.

As usual, feel free to jump on my miserable post for enjoying a MMA fight or a wrestling party as you love!

Best regards, Vincent.

I agree re startup. I routinely remove everything from the sources tab before closing topaz.

Re editing presets I just load the preset, change something and save it with the same name.

Hi David Clarke,

Thanks for your feedback!

You wrote: “Re editing presets I just load the preset, change something and save it with the same name.”

How do you proceed. I can not save under same name a preset. I have to create a new name. Otherwise, the app does not accept to save the editing!

The way Topaz deals with presets is absolute rubbish. However, there IS a round-about way to update a user preset. The trick I use is to set that preset as the default in settings. Then close the app and re-open. You should then see a two circle icon by the preset tab. Only when it’s in that state, you can then tweak any settings and choose Update Preset from a right click on the tab.
