Addendum: The issue occurs when using “Export” and not “Preview”, and it’s possible that sleeping and waking my PC restored the preview
With Topaz Video AI v3.0.1 I converted a video from 1920x1080 23.976 fps to 3840x2160 at 59.94 fps, with Apollo for the interpolation and Gaia HW for the upscaling.
The output file it generated, when viewed in MediaInfo says “Slowmo 1% and framerate changed to 59.94 using apo-4. Enhanced using ghq-5. Changed resolution to 3840x2160”. I didn’t ask it to use slowmo at all so that “slowmo 1%” is wrong.
In the frame rate section of the MediaInfo the output file says:
Frame rate mode : Variable
Frame rate : 59.940 (59940/1000) FPS
Minimum frame rate : 29.970 FPS
Maximum frame rate : 11 988.000 FPS
Original frame rate : 59.940 (60000/1001) FPS
I don’t know why it’s changed it to variable frame rate and why it’s set the min frame rate to 29.97 fps or why the max frame rate is 11,988 fps when I asked it to set the output frame rate as 59.94 fps. The frame rate of the source was a constant frame rate (23.976). Shouldn’t the app have a setting for whether we want it output as constant or variable, since not all apps work as well with variable frame rates, so I’d have preferred it if it output the video at constant 59.94 fps unless I’d set it otherwise.
Argh! That’s horrible, I haven’t had the joy of that problem yet. I do disk checks routinely and also run “SFC /Scannow” to make certain there’s no corruption.
Let’s hope they fix this stuff quickly (and completely.) It’s wonderful for what I’m doing; that is when it works… ![]()
An old programmers axiom: "There’s no such thing as automatic.
But I suppose there may be "too automatic."

Ok guys…
I took a “leap of faith” and purchased Topaz AI v.3.0.1. last night at the special reduced price until 11/4/22.
I’m counting on you guys to fix this FFMpeg error " -vsync is deprecated. Use -fps_mode" that many of us are getting.
I’m currently testing with the old v2.5.4 and the new v.3.0.1 versions.
I’ve only used Topaz AI v.3.0.1. for a few days, but can see that it’s a lot better than the DVDFab AI product I tried.
A few things I don’t like:
V3.0.1. does not use any of my Cpu
Not supported fulling via GeoForce Experience (yes I know that Nvidia is probably waiting/wanting a good stable version)
Output of audio is at a reduced 96Bps when I do “copy” for some reason, it’s not actually copying the 256 k/bs of the original audio.
I’ve only really jumped into it since yesterday, but have not gotten the results I want for video quite yet.
Things I really like:
You can run multiple instances.
What I’m doing:
My first project is converting five seasons of an old TV show that has videos of < 720p, Bps of around 1,500 to begin with horrible sound that were converted from VHS tapes at 480x360 & 640x480 for about 1/2 each.
It will take a while to get good files for 720p (which is my goal).
I’ve mastered the sound issue by using Corel Video Studio 2021 Ultimate and using it’s sound filters on the very horrible sound which has hums, clicks and other noise with the voices kind of secondary.
Settled on 3 sound filters and volume increase that does a really good job of cleaning up the sound.
Hiss Remove set at 18% 18%
NewBlue Hum remove at 60hz, -34 & 76
NewBlue Clean with 94, 59.9, -8.8, 24
Volume bump to 200%
I’m kind of lost and a novice on cleaning up the video:
In VS 2021 Ultimate I did use crop for the left and right margins that had small vertical sections at each border that were black/jumpy areas.
I also outputted to the same size with 2,000 bps choice - using H264.
I did this because of the FFmpeg error I kept getting when trying to use “stabilization” in V 3.0.1. of Topaz.
It worked out ok.
Now I’m thinking I might need to reverse the order if I can get stabilization/cropping from Topaz - Video first, then audio.
I think I need to use the Artemis Low because of the VHS/TV source, but any tips would be greatly appreciated.
The VS Ultimate 2021 sound, cropping and output takes less than 3 minutes to produce the file. Shows are about 24 minutes in duration each. Nice on sound, and pre-cleanup? of 360x480 videos so far.
Also just discovered that you can install Nvidia Game & Studio drivers both on you P.C. and toggle between the two and choose which to be used by clicking on Drivers & the three dots to the right and choosing which one in GeoForce Experience. ![]()
Can’t wait to use this product on newer files and see what it does.

Hi Joachim,
Those are the Game Drivers (which I have installed).
It is my understanding that the Studio drivers (currently on V522.30) have things in them that the game drivers don’t that products like Topaz AI 3.0.1/2.5.4.? can use.
I discovered you can install both on your Win PC environment and toggle between which is used by going into GeoForce Experience, clicking drivers and choosing the 3 dots to the right and which you want to use.
Anyone else have some experience in performances of the Nvidia Game drivers vs. the Studio drivers on 2.5.4 or 3.0.1 for speed and quality?
Right now I’m testing using Nvidia Studio drivers.

Face the error when I process .ts video.
-vsync is deprecated. Use -fps_mode
Passing a number to -vsync is deprecated, use a string argument as described in the manual.
Malformed AAC bitstream detected: use the audio bitstream filter ‘aac_adtstoasc’ to fix it (‘-bsf:a aac_adtstoasc’ option with ffmpeg)
av_interleaved_write_frame(): Operation not permitted
Error muxing a packet for output file #0
I believe this is a warning, not an error, but yes it needs to be addressed.
This however is an error and will prevent your export from working, and I usually see it when I have audio set to ‘copy’ on .TS files. Edit: switching to ‘auto’ on audio fixes that error for me.
Yes, i was copy audio but change the “auto” is not fix that issue. Same error message.
Does this error "-vsync is deprecated. Use -fps_mode" have multiple reasons to pop up?
I’ve read a few different “fixes”:
- Someone indicated the FFMpeg error is not actually a FFMpeg error and if you copied the FFMpeg details into “run” it would show you what was actually the error, such as setting the download path.
I don’t know how to do this “run” (I can copy FFMpeg details from 3.0.1) to find out. ![]()
- Another person said that copying Videoai.dll from the old version path to the new version fixed their problem and another user responded that it also fixed theirs.
Did this, figured it’d either use it or not.
- And yet another person said to make sure that Topaz AI FFmpeg was defined properly in your environmental path and that other older versions were not.
I think I did this correctly.
- David.123 switching to ‘auto’ on audio fixes that error for me.
I’m also gonna do this.
But right now, I’m just not gonna use Stabilization till they get this addressed by Topaz AI in a release cause I want to get some good outputs and not waste a lot of time troubleshooting.
Kind of a bad introduction for me as a new Topaz AI user with this error issue and people talking about 2.5.4 vs 3.0.1 - bugs/performance.
Off to get some good outputs hopefully! ![]()

Great update, encoding speed is slightly faster on my RTX 4090. I noticed you support AV1 encoding with NVENC, which is awesome, but I was curious how y’all got access to that since that isn’t in the mainline ffmpeg yet.
Michael,
Topaz made a major move when they rolled out VEAI 3.x. Unfortunately, (IMHO,) they may have made the initial release a bit early. there are still a few obvious glitches that need straightening out. Although, the same can be said universally for almost all new software releases, regardless of source…
Being an optimist and a [retired] programmer, as well, (An oxymoron, for certain,) I believe that this version of VEAI will become an invaluable tool for resurrecting and refining video.
Also, I believe that Topaz is not using the mainstream version of FFmpeg for VEAI, but one customized to augment VEAI’s functionality and hardware support.
It looks like this problem I had is because of the number of processes being selected at a time. If I go over a certain number, such as 3 or 4, it seems to not be doing anything, but it is running in the background.
It even does this if you have selected those certain numbers, then only actually convert one video?
That ‘glitch’ is currently being scrutinized. There are several flavors of this being reported. I suspect it will be fixed rather soon.
On second thought, computers do have one truly automatic feature; it is implicit in their nature.
They can find even the most carefully hidden bug and run right up onto it; and usually at the worst possible time.
REQUEST FOR IMPORT OPTION
I don’t have a license for v 3.x yet, I’m waiting for more improvements before upgrading my license.
1 It would be great to have VAi to import DVD file formats ***.VOB. It is hard to find really high quality converters, and it is an extra step in trying to fix/improve up a video file.
2 I still find moving from frame to frame very slow with a long video file in order to select sections that I want to mark for processing.
3 Allow stitching together multiple selections of a long video file, so that the render would create a single output file.
Please add your voice if any of the suggestions appeal to you.
Thanks
All of my videos look like this if I enable stabilization. Doesn’t appear stabilization is working.
I’m seeing a problem in 3.0.0 and 3.0.1 where it won’t load videos from a network share. Worked fine in 2.6.4.

Love it. Sad but very true

Me too - running an RTX 3060 here, and I also am under the impression (rightly or wrongly) that the Studio drivers are better - they are certainly quicker, although 45 minutes over a 13-hour process may not seem like much I’ll take it every time.
What I didn’t know was that both driver sets are possible, and this is going to get tested later as ever since I switched to Studio drivers I get a huge performance hit on my video game ‘Terra Invicta’ (which is the most addictive game ever) and I appreciate the tip.
