Hi everyone,
I really wish that is easy answer to my dilemma but I’m afraid there is no easy answer.
topaz video AI it’s awesome program no doubt about it.
But for me the most difficult part is to find write filters to apply for upscaling the video.
I have spent already hours and hours trying To find Write combination of the filters but without any Succeeding.
I have videos 1280x720 with 25FPS And I’m trying to upscale to 1920 by 1080, Little bit more to be sharp and bring some detail up, Everything that I try so far is not good enough. It’s either too much or not enough.
What I’m asking is if anybody can give me some idea so I don’t have to spend Hours and hours trying different filters and on the end nothing.
some kind of input how you guys doing it?
Thank you very much
Daniel Ocko
What do you mean with “Write Filters” ?
Do you mean Filters, that can upscale “Fonts” beautiful ?
Look i can guess, by the size to which you want to upscale, that your Display is a
1080p Display.
Flat Displays got the sharpest picture, when they use there native Resolution.
So the native Resolution from your Display is 1920 x 1080, any other resolution must be upscaled (bad → less ppi = Less Sharpness) or downscaled (good → more ppi = more sharpness) first. Because Flat Displays can just display one resolution (unless a CRT, which can display a wide range of resolutions without scaling !) there native resolution.
Let’s do some math.
1920 / 1280 = 1.500000
1080 / 720 = 1.500000
Those conditions are bad for scaling.
Scaling works the best, with Integer Numbers.
2 x 1280 = 2560
2 x 720 = 1440
Now, there are a ton of Display with that native Resolution (if you use a 19" 1280x1024 Display like me, you got Gold for 720p. Because there is no Scaling needed at all. It’s razor Sharp)
What other thing are bad for sharpness ? If the pixel density drops.
How it drops ? With a bigger screen
So the first thing that i would do in your situation is, to ask my self.
Do my 720p Clips realy look unsharp ? or is it, because i use a 1080p Display that is to big ?
If so, i would ask my self. What is the smallest Display with 2560 x 1440 that i can still accept from the Size ? (for me personaly it would be 27")
If you dont want to buy another Display, and just make your 720p stuff sharper (and the Filesize bigger ) and add some detail (like you mentioned in your post)
and it was always to sharp or to less, then i would suggest that you try following.
Take your Input:
Set Artemis HQ, Grain 1:1, Recover Detail 80 (all without upscaling !)
Activate Second Enhancement in the Preferences
Now click on “Add second enhancement” Set “Intermediate” to “Scale x2”
and select Artemis Aliasing and Moire, Recover Detail 100.
If you dont like the Grain, try it without…but my expirence is, that Video AI give much better results with Grain (but the Grain will eat up enormous Space ! The Files will be very huge !)
If it has to much Detail & Sharpness, try another “Recover Detail” Setting in the First Pass, or Artemis Aliasing and Moire.
What sometimes can do some wonder is to use Proteus V3 (not 4 !) in the second enhancement
