Topaz Video AI 5.4

Artemis is to plastic for me
Proteus delivers sutle upscaling with good temporal enhancement (good use of temporal enrichment en noise reduction), with sufficient control.
Iris1 is unmatched in sutle face enhancement but has a tendency to create artifacts or plastic on all other stuff.
I don’t do any serious noise reduction in topaz. it’s produces non existing details out of noise with stange behaviour. best is to remove all croma noise by neat video and some reduction in luma noise.
beyond that use topaz to enhance. I would love a irisv1 and proteus combined model. rhea looks like this promise but produces aliased lines.

Also the order in which topaz handles the filters is not ideal. frame interpolation works far better if you first enhance.
Straight from gui topaz will first do interpolation and then enchance, but it creates far more artifacts.
I understand the reason. if you upscale and then interpolate it will use far more resources. but it’s definately worth the quality. (though you can only achieve this on the cli)

Plastic is bad; but worse even than you may think, as apparently denoising is not done prior to the rest. That’s very bad, as noise is typically uniformly distributed over the entire movie. Now, if A.i start to mess with denoising, what you’ll wind up with, is small screen patches of un-denoised areas, that, after that, you can then never get rid of any more (as the noise is no longer uniform). I wish TVAI were like a frame server, using one filter after another.

Microsoft has been making incremental changes to the operating system so that sometime in the near future, your windows OS will also be cloud based. Essentially, you’ll be paying monthly rent to use your Windows OS. This is the primary reason I stopped upgrading with Adobe and stuck CS6, is because I refuse to pay frigging rent!

Oops! That page doesn’t exist or is private.

Yeah, 5.4.08a is an Alpha release, of course (indicated by the trailing a).

Since today, i have stuttering as well in previews and exports, but on ALL models, i have no idea what changed, as i did not upgrade any drivers in my system. I reverted back to version 5.3.6 and gone are the stutters.

Ok then I’m gone. Apart from the rental model high costs, I want to see how 8k upscales, big projects works on this cloud.

guys “preview is black” doesn’t help troubleshoot at all.
Does it give an error?
They state the preview is now mpv. Download an mpv sample video, can your PC play that or is that black? If it doesn’t play it’s a codec issue.
People said it crashed and gave “an error i’ve never seen before” ok wtf did it sayyyyy?
If you have a 4080 check your nvidia settings. Did Topaz Video AI somehow get changed to render on your CPU/potentially nonexistent instead of your 4080?
Failing to render is likely a completely separate issue than the preview btw

I viewed it more as a “here you go poor little kid on your mom’s Windows 10 Samsung Fridge. Now you can use our software with no GPU potential on your rig and still acquire an output”.

I downloaded the mpv codec, there is no problem with it, the problem is with topaz video ai, it does not show preview. They need to fix this error urgently.

hmm ok, does it happen only when you have 23.976 or 29.97 fps? and what is when you speed up to 24fps/30fps (FFmpeg, or tsMuxer)

I finally solved the problem. After installing (as admin) the application from the mpv site, you need to select mpv as the default video player in windows settings. Then the preview worked normally.

One of the keyproblem is TVAI has no good noise removal, NYX is useless destroys you’re image, noise reduction with Rhea looks bad you shouldn’t use it and with Iris you loose to much details. So best neutral noise reduction does Proteus.

Unfortunately Proteus is for noise reduction before using other model not really suitable, because Proteus plays image enhancer even in manual mode, instead of just denoise what you have set.

So TVAI needs a good denoiser you can adjust before models like RHEA takes effect. if they can’t do that, they should take the denoiser from Proteus with just denoise part and place it as a filter in front of each model. Denoise strenght must be adjustable by users from zero to x.

There are a lot of other changes you wrote that should be tuned. For example Rhea + Proteus needs a face recovery like Iris has, preferably one you can adjust in strenght or turn it on/off.

Hello.

That seems odd, though.

DRs, P-Pro, Maya, etc. do not require, to what it seems, IMO, a mandatory 3rd-party utility as a default system requirement for an app to function properly.

Someone from Topaz’s staff needs to clarify this forced requirement if true.

Reverting to the previous release works. Only getting this stuttering in v5.4.
Don’t seem to have the problem with 25fps footage. I even tried deleting all the models and downloading all the updated versions. The old model Iris Low Quality v1 works just fine in v5.4. I can use Chronos set to 23.976fps and then it works but that of course slows down encoding.

push!

I can’t agree with you. I like Nyx’s noise removal, it helped me salvage a lot of videos.

My sister works for Adobe and even with employee discount to rent the creative suite, it isn’t worth it. I can do everything I need to do with CS6, but without the cost and hassle. This cloud/rental model is forcing enthusiasts and home users out, because of high cost. If your not doing it to make money, it’s unaffordable.

Do you mean the noise removal from the ‘Reduce Noise’ slider or from the ‘Fix Compression’ slider in Proteus?
The Reduce Noise one has always been terrible. In Proteus 4, Fix Compression changed to become a denoiser and does a pretty good job I think.

I think NYX Fast and NYX 3 do good at denoising. I can get them to only denoise. NYX 2 is bad because it does oversharpen no matter what settings are selected.

Hehe, but the pricing! Unless they change it, it will quickly cost that poor kid more than buying a new computer.
