Topaz Video 1.0.1 - Patch

How much memory is yours, please? Mine is just the 32 GB version and I all I have got out of Starlight is a blurred mess i.e. far worse than the original. I appreciate it’s below the recommended specs., and I’m well prepared for it to be ultra slow, but it satisfies the minimum specs, and so therefore should work on the base Mac Studio M1. But it clearly doesn’t, at least not with the very short low resolution clips I’ve tried.

One thing I have noticed is that it spends a lot of its time reading / writing a massive swap file, up to around 16 GB, with corresponding gaps in the GPU usage. That probably explains why mine never gets warm at all, the fans staying at the minimum 1100 rpm throughout the starlight processing.

Thanks.

Andy

Starlight mini uses up to 62GB here on my MacStudio…

Many thanks, that’s very useful to know. I’ve been thinking of upgrading so just wondering what I might buy.

Andy

Someone of TL somewhere told that SLM eating up nearly all RAM on AppleSilicon was something that they want to reduce in upcoming versions.

On the Mac, I was able to get local Starlight enabled after logging out and logging back in… Did not have to reinstall.

New behavior: Mac Studio 36GB now crashing (and rebooting) with Starlight (local) due to memory consumption (I could see 39GB, but I know it can be more). Using Version 26.1 Beta (25B5042k)

@20rushtonj Yes I realize now. I always work with Topaz AI at work. But I wanted to digitize a bunch of 8mm and VHS for from my granddad. So I figured, I’ll buy it for personal use. Never ever did I read anything that Starlight mini was discontinued. And by the crazy amount of messages from other users on this forum that cannot render Starlight local anymore I pretty sure I’m not the only one. It’s 300 euros down the drain. I feel a little robbed. Because, let’s be honest, who ever reads those release notes? Ofcourse that’s a me problem but still. Making it cloud and credit based is just another way to make money. I’m really dissapointed by this!

How long I need to wait for cloud? :open_mouth:
And my credits are taken.
First is Starlinght Mini. Second is Sharp…

Same here I’m still on 7.0.2, additional to this i use since two days also old Beta 7.0.0.4.b, just for some rare vids where quality is for me most important. This old Beta is the only one who max out 32GB Vram of my 5090, additional it uses Shared Ram up to 6GB, this slows down speed worse, but the 35-38GB usage gives me best Starlight results

starlight or starlight Sharp or both?

I have an M3 Max with 128
GB of memory an it heats everything above 80-90c with the power supply going above 100c. My fans whirl up to over 3000 when using starlight, Nyx LX even Rhea. It’s a fully loaded M3 Max. I am running OS 14.8 because I have other software I use I have to hold back on updates until I’m sure the Tahoe is stable.

Starlight only. I was trying local processing. I will check Starlight Sharp tomorrow, but isn’t that one cloud-only?

On Mac M1 Max / Apple Silicon 1.0.1 Starlight states my hardware cannot be used. So much for local rendering for Founders.

I have 64 GB RAM, but starlight is so slow that it is unusable. a few minutes per frame - forget it.

Starlight Mini wasn’t discontinued, it was renamed to “Starlight”.

You can still use Starlight Mini locally, you just need to be a “Founder” (which I believe you aren’t), or have the Pro subscription. And hope you don’t run into the bugs other people have been having.

What Topaz Labs has done is scummy. They made Starlight Mini avaliable to anyone with a Windows NVIDIA computer and a Topaz Labs license (Standard or Pro).

Then they release Topaz Video, increased the price of the standard license, and remove your ability to access Starlight Mini with the “Standard License”. So you’re paying more than previously, and getting less.

At the moment you still can use “Starlight mini” on V7 Releases without Founder state. But could be they shut down Starlight there, sometimes. They gives us no new TVAI version, it gets replaced by the video “Studio” Edition and in the Studio Starlight + Starlight Sharp is only for Founders or Pro

yes and my question is, who pays every year for the standard license, when there is no longer SLm and if they don’t update existing models like proteus, Iris and Rhea, there is no incentive to pay annually. So people who don’t need Starlight and have perpetual, stay there. I thought they wanted bring down perpetual users, but without Starlight included in the Standard, that won’t work

I don’t think you can buy a perpetual license any more, and all new subscriptions will only work with the studio apps? So everyone paying for the “Standard” license of the studio version are probably doing so because either:

  • They can’t afford the pro version
  • They don’t realize they’re missing features from the pro version
  • They are okay using cloud processing for starlight models (E.g. They have a old/lowend computer that’s too slow to process Starlight in a reasonable time frame), so there is no need to pay for Pro if they aren’t going to benefit from it

I don’t mean to come off as crass…
That said..
I’m trying to read this thread for beta feedback and it’s full of people posting about problems as if they are angry that there are bugs in a literal beta test. I understand the importance of reporting bugs here, but people using the beta should realize that bugs are inherent to testing a new version of a product, and as someone who is just trying to read this forum to get an idea for bugs people have already experenced, it’s very annoying to read people whine and complain about something that wwe know is going to have issues that hopefully do not make it to the public release

Beta testing does not equal “early acces to fully polished products”

If that’s what you’re looking for, you should not have signed up to be a beta tester.
Seriously, if you’re here to complain about a feature not working correctly, move on, use the last stable release for your mission critical work… In fact, maybe don’t use a test version of a product for the first time on something that is mission critical.
Maybe do what the word says… test it..
"
Please, do everyone a favor and go back to using the release version and stay out of the beta forum if you’re going to complain light a slighted paying consumer for the software not working. Testing is obviously not made for here, and you are only here because you “want early access” …

It’s a beta test, stuff is broken, you are here to note it down and move on to the next thing.

Otherwise you’re’ making it incredibly difficult to be productive in these threads, and you’re making it hard for everyone else.

Thanks
