Subtitles not processing when converting to MP4

Hi All!

Topaz Video 1.0 subtitles not being added after video conversion to FHD using Proteus and the MP4 codec option. This was the same for the older Topaz Video AI version, but it used to work using the MKV codec option. I submitted this as support ticket, but was told it is not supported. But strange how it worked in MKV if not supported. But now the newer version does not work with MKV video either (command line error). I submitted a support ticket on this. Anyway as someone that is older and my hearing is not what it used to be the subtitle is a nice option.

Anyway to get around this I have been extracting the subtitles from the original video using the FFmpeg command: “ffmpeg -i VIDEO.mp4 VIDEO.srt”. Then processing the video with Topaz Video (Excellent results btw, better than any other program I have tried). After that remuxing the sub back into the video using Handbrake and at the same time reducing the size of the file with noticeable reduction in quality. Kind of a pain to go through all this though.

It seems to me this should be able to be done, but I have absolutely no qualifications as a programmer.

Thanks for reading and hopefully implementing.

Thank you for submitting the support ticket to the team directly as well, as you can see we can miss things on the forums at times but we do try and get back through to address all posts.

The MKV container should retain the subtitle tracks, or you can add them back later using Handbrake as a work around. I know the team was looking into this as it affects many users.

HI Kyle,

Thanks for the follow up. Yes I did try MKV a while ago and that did retain the subtitles. In many ways I prefer MKV anyway. Having MP4 would be nice as another option. The other program I use WInXvideo AI can do it but with mixed results (It doesn’t have the MKV option at all). For instance last time I used it the subtitles were there but no language type definition. Keep up the good work!

Mike

why so many uses Handbrake, I use it also but only when nothing other helps than re-encode. Adding subtitles again and all add all audio tracks again, you can use free “MKVToolnix”, just import there both, the new upscaled video and the source one.

Using orig DVD subtitle in upscaled video always looks bad..but you can change this, there is a way. My older post here: Subtitle support - #13 by Mayday

I just wanted to point out that mp4 cannot contain a subtitle track, the container format cannot.

The subtitle support is more limited, but:

interesting, so no PGS but “Timed Text” means this you can add SRT and works or must be converted somehow? my experience mp4 and subtitles are it’s not working and multiple audio tracks switch does not work for me either

I’ve only done it with Handbrake. It converted ‘ass’ format subs to ‘timed text’ (tx3g) subs.

I’ve always used mpc-hc for playback, and it’s worked fine there.

Might be your player?

I have several mp4 videos with more than one audio track (mostly german and english, sometimes an additional 5.1 track) and can switch between those in both VLC and Plex.

could be, I may should upgrade my vlc
