Starlight performance questions (Mac)

Starlight is working for me now (M4 max studio base model) but I’ve experienced some unusual performance.

Upscaling some very low files (240p) has been slower than some 480p videos. I recently did a marathon scale of a 1 hour 240p30 movie which took 12 days to compete with 0.1 for as my typical speed across the entire film.

My second (in progress) 480p24 movie is cruising along at 0.2 with about a 5 and change day project (2 days to go) at a speed of 0.2 fps.

Both are 2x Output. Is this normal for a smaller video to be half the performance?

What you’re seeing here is actually expected behavior with Starlight, even though it feels a bit counterintuitive.

Lower resolution inputs like 240p can sometimes run slower than higher resolutions like 480p. This comes down to how the model processes detail rather than just pixel count. With very low-quality footage, Starlight has to do significantly more reconstruction work per frame to rebuild missing detail, which increases processing time.

This behavior is consistent with what we’ve seen in our internal testing as well on mac.
