SDR to HDR Issues

I upscaled my bluray copy of Gremlins 2 to 4K a while back and the results were phenomenal. I recently decided to run the 4k through again and convert it to HDR.

I applied the default SDR to HDR settings and applied the default Proteus enhancement as well. I made sure the resolution and the codec settings all matched the input file. It took 4 days and the results were horrible. Any scene with bright lights and white/yellow have so much noise and artifacts it makes it unwatchable. Is there a setting i should change to make sure it doesnt happen the next time?

Thanks!

I use TVAI a lot, but no HDR so far, so I have no personal experience yet. But what I could read in this forum is SDR to HDR results differs from phenomenal to worse, it’s very inconsistent (looks like beta stage). You must do the HDR conversion while upscaling, upscale first and second step SDR to HDR results in bad quality/artefacts.

Looking into this and will get back with you on some options or settings to try and use.

The AI model is trying to use data from the original source file to generate the matte for the HDR and it is possible it is over emphasizing certain pixels and values from the original source material.
