Request | Add Option For Shortest Edge

Although we have the option to set the resolution to the longest edge when upscaling in Gigapixel, I would also like the option for upscaling to the shortest edge.

Hi.

Not sure how this would work as an option because, of resolution limit which is a maximum of 32,000px on the longest side

Currently you can set the scale to either Height or Width as your default which should cover the shortest edge for you

However, if there was an option to set the Shortest Edge as apposed to the Height, Width or Longest Edge and supposedly, you could scale your image on the Shortest Edge by four times it’s original size for instance then, what would happen if the Longest Side hit the 32,000px threshold

Then, surely the image won’t be able scale on the Shortest Edge because, the Longest Side has reach the scaling threshold therefore, defeating the point of the exercise.

The point of using the Longest Side only is that the image can scale to the 32,000px limit and not effect the shortest side.

Besides, if you scale one side in this case the Longest Side by two, four or even six times aren’t you then, effectively scaling the Shortest Edge by that same amount

I was pitching this option because of a process queue having a mix of horizontal and vertical pictures. With this change, the shortest side would be independent of height and width.

I appreciate what you’re saying, and have myself placed a vote for it incidentally you are allowed to place a vote for your own suggestion having said that, if Topaz implemented this feature for you then that would be great.

However, the fact remains setting the Longest Edge or Shortest Edge is effectively the same thing regardless of the independence

For example, if you have a group of images in both Portrait and Landscape then setting the Longest or Shortest Edge by a factor of Two, Four or Six Times then the image would be processed exactly the same.

The only difference would be that 32,000px limit bearing that in mind, another example would be if you were batch processing for argument sake a hundred images and you set the Shortest Edge and a scale of four times then, process the images.

Everytime the 32,000px limit was reached on an image with the long side because, the application would effectively still monitor both sides of the image and everytime the 32,000px was reached the process would stop for that image and carry on to the next image in the queue.

Therefore, when the process was completed you would end up with several images that hadn’t been scaled properly by four times on the Shortest Edge and that’s why the Longest Edge is the best option as a safeguard against such instances.

And as a consequence, you would have to go through the images checking that they were correct

Yes I know that can happen with the Longest Edge as well but, it’s only an example and that’s likely to happen more with the the Shortest Edge rather than the Longest Side of the image

Reference to selecting the Shortest Side within Gigapixel > Quick update

The ability to select the Shortest Side as an option has been added to Photo AI

So, fingers crossed Topaz might add it to Gigapixel sometime in the near future.
