Project loading fails if the source file is missing

Steps to reproduce:

  1. create a new project
  2. add a file to the project
  3. quit Topaz Video
  4. rename the file
  5. re-launch Topaz Video

Expected outcome

  • project opens without the renamed file present (perhaps with a message that isn’t a crash dialog)
  • application functions as per normal

Actual outcome

  • “Opening project” phase stuck at 50%
  • Topaz Video is now in a weird state

In this state if you cancel the bugged loading dialog (which returns you to the Projects page), then re-open the project, it will open this time. However, if you add a video to the project it’s in a broken state - nothing works; no previews, no filters. You need to close the project and reopen it again before it starts working.

This has been broken for as long as the project workflow was introduced.

As my workflow involves opening files for editing and then once completed the files are moved elsewhere, I encounter this issue every time I use the product.

FWIW my ideal workflow is a project-less one, in alignment with other editing tools - open file, edit, export, quit.

Notes

  • macOS 26.2 (note: while Tahoe is still “not supported”, this issue predates Tahoe’s Sep 2025 release)
  • Topaz Video 1.2.0
