Just started using Topaz Photo instead of Photo AI. In Photo AI, I would save presets that included Upscale, and it would save based on the pixel dimensions (i.e. 4500px wide).
In Topaz Photo, it seems to link the preset to the Scale factor instead. I work with images of vastly different starting sizes and upsize to certain minimum widths for processing, so the Scale doesn’t work well here.
Please allow presets in Topaz Photo to Upscale based on pixel dimensions rather than Scale factor. Thank you!
I have to say I don’t use Presets myself but, it seems to me you’re looking in the wrong place
Meaning if you were able to set and save Dimensions within Topaz Photo AI and only save Scale within Topaz Photo then, you probably have your Upscale and Resize Preference set-up differently within both applications.
For example; Topaz Photo AI Upscale and Resize is probably set for Width, Height, Longest Edge or Shortest Edge.
Whereas. Topaz Photo is set to the default Scale only which gives you the option of scaling the image between One and Six times.
Goto your Preferences Menu or Press Command/Control plus the Comma key , and a new window will open
On the left you’ll see your main Categories, the one you want is under Autopilot and Click on Upscale and Resize.
The Upscale and Resize options will appear on the right under Resize Type there’s a Box with a Down Arrow Click on the the Box and select Set Output Size from the list.
A new options Box will appear below the Set Output Size Box simply Click on it and set your desired Dimensions option for the list.
Now when you save your Preset Topaz Photo will take into account the Dimensions and not the Scale.
Thank you for the info! I checked those preferences and they were already on Set Output Size and 4500px width (maybe that transferred over from Photo AI).
That doesn’t seem to affect the Presets, though, it just makes 4500px width the default starting point when I add an Upscale filter. I tried resetting that preference to default and adjusting again, but still the Upscale in my Presets applies based on Scale factor.
Having a 4500px width default is helpful, but I use Presets to apply multiple filters at once, and also to upsize to several different pixel widths/heights (not only 4500w).
Using the software sample images to demonstrate, I added a few filters, set the Upscale dimensions to 6000px wide (which happens to be 1.5x scale on this image) and clicked “Save edits as a new preset”:
Then, I applied that preset to another image, but rather than Upscaling to 6000px wide, it goes to 4634px wide since this one is smaller than the image I used to create the Preset.
I never actually tried creating a Preset based on Scale factor in Photo AI, so I’m not sure if that was even possible (maybe it’s been swapped for Topaz Photo) but I definitely make a lot of use of a pixel-based Upscale Preset!
Perhaps in their haste, to get these new application versions available for Topaz Studio, setting the dimensions within Presets got overlooked and maybe they’ll reintroduce it in a future Update although I would have thought it could be something that be just simply ported over.
Elise, you could always make this an Idea so, other members can Vote to bring it back I’ll currently vote for it.
We tested that, and we are able to reproduce this.
Results of my test:
In Photo AI, when saving the preset it is saving the width dimension.
In Topaz Photo, when saving the preset it is saving the scale factor.
I opened a development ticket to look into this. I t would be to restore the width to be the default, or to add an option to choose from when creating the preset. I think some users could want the other option too.
Thanks for looking into this. I want to add two notes:
It can be height, not just width. In Photo AI, if I set the height (e.g. to 2160), then future photos respect that height. Notably, btw, the output file uses the height in the filename.
This impacts not just presets, but also when you right-click another photo and Apply Current Settings. In Photo AI, if I upscale to a specific height, Apply Current Settings will enforce that height on the target images. In Photo, it enforces scale factor.
