Hyperion model - release/feedback?

I was thinking updating my Topaz to 6.01 - does this have the new Hyperion model or is that still beta only? How are the results?

Yes it is part of TVAI 6. I don’t have a use for it, so I have never tried it. Last I heard, it might work, but you probably need to do a lot of metadata fixing for it to display correctly. Something like that.

Results are amazing when the source video has just the right contrast and saturation. Otherwise (regardless of pushing all the TVAI settings to absolute possible minimum) the highlights are still overblown. Same deal with “rainbow colored skin” where TVAI make up all the shades you can imagine and beyond. I tried to fiddle with TVAI “input color override” with absolutely no effect. (test sample of 100+ videos, for 95% both issues will apply)

I am not very knowledgeable about HDR and only got my first OLED (Dual QHD 49" QD-OLED) half a year ago. And i do not know how unique TVAI SDR>HDR solution is. (for example i don’t even know if it produce dynamic or static HDR) So for now, at least for me, its a pretty impressive and future promising “feature-demo”, but nothing else.

On the bright side, i can say that Hyperion is very fast. And with recently fixed MPV integration also provide down instant “preview” of SDR>HDR.

I’ve used the Hyperion model for a wide range of video clips and I dare say that it works quite well. Or let’s say Topaz handels HDR way better than Adobe Premiere Pro Beta.

It works best - “wonders” within the AI video workflow, so I have picture and I use an AI to generate a video-clip, then I use Topaz AI to upscale it. Adding HDR here is perfect. Or at least for the kind of picture to videos I used it for.

It works “okay” when transferring “normal” video clips to HDR, and it fails miserably with colors which I would call difficult human skin tones.

Most importantly I’m talking here about generating content which looks great both on my SDR monitor as well as my MacBook Pro HDR display.

Now Adobe Premiere fails in the SDR category for being too conservative while topaz fails for being too aggressive. And the topaz Hyperion settings are too narrow to make a difference overall - so when topaz fails, you have the choice between failing beautifully or failing miserably.

What I would need most and this is why I’m writing this in the hope of some dev reading it:

  • More control of the color space in HDR, specifically the Metadata, so that what Topaz conforms with what Youtube wants.
  • Adding HLG to the PQ offered.
  • Improve the handling of difficult colors

Thanks for the feedback, I’m also considering this tool: https://motionarray.com/final-cut-pro-templates/hdr-look-effects-1138553/

Interesting thanks. What happens when I import a HDR source which was SD-HDR made with TVAI and then I apply a model of my choice and export it, do I loose the HDR Metadata?
