I had an M1 Mac Studio Ultra for about a year when they first came out then went back to PC with a 4090 GPU.
I’m tempted with the new Mac Studio whenever they get released but just wondering how those who have an M2 Studio Ultra (with lots of GPU cores) are getting on with Topaz Video?
Is it more optimized now compared to Nvidia cards and do more Apple GPU cores make much difference?
I know the M4 laptops/Mac Mini are good but they lack GPU cores compared to the Studio and hoping the new Studio will have more than 76 GPU cores.
I’m mainly using the program now for x2 Rhea upscales from SD footage and I get about 24fps with my 4090 card for reference.
Unfortunately, TVAI doesn’t really scale very well with GPU cores.
My Mac Studio M2 Ultra with 60 GPU cores is only about 2.5x faster than my MacBook Pro with M1 Pro (16 GPU Cores).
What’s worse is that Iris performance on MacOS is seriously hampered after rough bug-fix somewhere in 2023 and still didn’t get up to speed until now.
So, if you’re searching for the best performance, NVidia is the way to go. And of course those 4090 cards do have much more raw horsepower than any AppleSilicon chip.
That said other things like preview seem to work
much better on MacOS compared to Windows.
Going from a M1 Mac Mini to a M4 MacBook Pro – the frames per second on rendering nearly doubled for me. I am still using V 4.2.2 of Topaz Video AI as I am tired of being a “Beta” tester.
