Fix compression appears to do nothing

I am dealing with a situation where small portion of the video I am working with has a small amount of macro-blocking in a portion of the screen for a few frames. Where there should be steady color it appears blocky. I am working with DVD footage and the vast majority of it comes through great, but the original video file has the compression issue encoded into it and I thought I understood ‘fix compression’ as the setting to fix this sort of thing. Am I wrong?

The option to select a portion of frame(s) and target a problem would be a nice feature to help target issues (give more weight to for those frames only) the AI model appears to be missing.

I’m not really sure what you’re talking about there.
Many of the models have ‘fix common compression artifacts’ built-in (Artemis, Gaia, Dione). Others, you can choose how much happens (Iris, Proteus, Theia). For all of them, it applies it to the whole frame and whole amount of the video processed. With Proteus and Iris, you can use Auto and Relative to Auto to not apply the same amount to the whole length of the video processed—but it’s a trade-off. You cannot force it to ignore some of the auto values it comes up with. That can introduce new artifacts.

Yes, I see what you mean. Part of my work involves the digital restoration of analogue motion film. In my experience the “Fix Compression” option in Video AI works very well, or hardly at all. Moreover, almost regardless of strength it can strip areas of a motion image and create unwanted banding. This necessitates
taking the rendered clip in to an independent video editing app’ and applying a third party de-banding filter.

To correct banding within Video AI I’d like to suggest Topaz Labs include a de-banding option in future updates of this app’ . In addition, the sophistication of this application suggests it’s time to include key framing, so end users can manually modify compression, sharpening and motion blurring, etc. This option would undoubtedly be of use to professional video artists.

If you are a head of me you will see the real icing on the cake would be an option to create manual masks, which would allow the app’s tools to be applied to selected areas.

Season’s Greeting Topaz Labs and fellow product users.
