Feature Request | Adding Grain

When I’m enhancing old images sometimes they look too smooth and digital, and it would be helpful to have an ai film grain option. thanks

Have you tried hifi enhance, as the other models tend to get more cartoony removing noise and outlining edges. If you turn down the parameters then it actually does a good job of making a higher rez version of the noise.

The older version of it in gigapixel even had filmlike color noise but that has been cleaned up in photoai.

thanks for the suggestion - tried using hifi enhance on photo ai and it looks way more natural.

Need this :crossed_fingers:

There is other software that adds film effects and grain, think some are free, suggest you search for those.

They added the grain feature for video which could also be done in other software . Only seems logical to follow that for the photo app which a lot of people use to blow up film photography

Topaz did reply on another post, saying it was an effect but they want to concentrate on quality or something similar. I don’t use video.

This is strange because Topaz Studio had this feature.

There is Topaz video on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F14ksoQw5iU

Would love the option to add grain or noise, like you can in Video AI app. This might help blend some of the overly smooth textures

In my personal experience Photo AI works best on images shot digitally rather than scanned analogue images. I would like to see an AI model that is specifically made for Analogue film, slides and prints. This would allow for sharpening that can improve slightly blurry images and not sharpen the grain. Also denoising that can remove excessive grain. I find that I often have to use the old fashioned denoise tools before the advent of AI. They seem to do a much better job of denoising analogue images. Denoising with AI does not appear to be so effective.

Kind regards
Chris

I’ve noticed sometimes AI-based de-grain can mistake some coarse grain patterns for a regular texture. When this happens, the more noise removal is turned up, the more a phantom texture is rendered (such as threads of weaved cloth in a clear sky).

Another issue of interest peculiar to film restoration is uneven fading of primary color dyes which can be difficult to correct. This is made complicated by the fact that color photography dyes, human vision primaries and scanner primaries are not identical to begin with.

Hello everyone! If you’re interested in adding grain to an image, I’d love to chat. Please send me an email at dakota.wixom@topazlabs.com with the subject line ADDING GRAIN. Send me some example images you want grainyized.

Shhhh. No spoilers!

Hi Team, Thanks for making Photo AI finally an indispensable tool. V 2.4x is a huge improvement!

I shoot primarily on film. Film, however, exhibits grain (so does digital, there we call it texture) which is a vital part of the viewing experience. In Gigapixel, the algorithm “Lines” preserves grain and texture best. However, in Photo AI this algorithm is missing, which is a pity, as Photo AI with its sharpening and other options is arguably the more powerful tool. My request:

Integrate “Lines” into Photo AI’s Upscale tool.

Thanks for the great work!!

Hans

Thanks for the idea and suggestion! Make sure that you do not forget to vote for your idea

I’ve just tried out Superfocus BETA on this image (scanned from 35mm slides taken in the 1970s) It’s great, we’ve created some realistic focus here but still too “plasticy” for the archiving purposes I need it for. So my “fix” is to take the image into Photoshops Camera RAW filter and add grain there- see attachment. It’s by way of tricking/soothing the eye into believing this was a photo of the age, and the added grain gives it a sense of authenticity. I recognize some people think grain is noise that needs to be eliminated but it also harmonizes the image when there is artificial or noticeable smoothing and sharpening so I feel it would be worthy feature to Photo AI. I would want more control, for instance to dial back the effect in highlights and shadows and concentrate the effect mainly in the mid tones.

Just letting everyone know that this has been tagged as On-The-Roadmap, and our team is actively working on it for future versions!
