Feature Request | Ability To Straighten & Change Dimensions Of Crop

Send an ordinary RAW image to Photo AI from Lightroom.

In Photo AI crop the image to get rid of the unneeded areas. But, the image isn’t perfectly straight, so I CAN’T crop as I want because I can’t straighten it. If I’m going to CROP in Photo AI, I need to be able to straighten the image. Right now, I have to crop huge so I KNOW I have enough pixels when I straighten the image. Makes the crop far less effective than it could be.

AND, now that I’ve cropped the image, HOW LARGE IS IT? Have I cropped it so small I can’t use it as needed to make the print I want? I have no idea because I can’t SEE the cropped dimensions in pixels. Same problem as the straighten - if I can’t SEE the dimensions of my crop, I have to crop huge so I’m sure I have enough pixels.

Cropping is nice, but right now it’s marginally effective and blind.

I definitely agree with the above poster. Need a real time view of the crop box size without have to click apply and then go back and repeat multiple, multiple, times.

The other problem is the “custom” function in “crop” (not “resize”) is barely functional at best. If I want to crop a photo at a 4x5 aspect for an 8x10 photo at 300ppi and I enter 2400 x 3000, I always get some other pixel count. At it’s best it is always off by a few pixels under or over, and at it’s worst it is no where in the ball park and is off by 100’s sometimes, 1000’s of pixels. I have yet to get a simple accurate 2400x3000 crop.

Resetting the crop and starting over results in the same endless loop of frustrating attempts. For a powerful “stand alone” desktop program it ends up being like a pinch and squeeze crop on a tiny smart phone screen.

I think cropping is one of the most basic functions in photo editing. Therefore, this tool should be mandatory in Topaz Photo AI, and not only in a primitive and not always fully functional version. A rotation function should also be available for this — manual (using the mouse) or by entering the number of degrees. For this I have to (often only) first crop and/or rotate the image in another tool (e.g. and not only ACDSee Photo Studio works for me without problems – I can apply standard, or constant proportions as well as arbitrary pixels x pixels, or shifting the crop boundaries using the mouse), save the result and then drag it into TPAI for further editing. That’s bad, just because of such a “little thing” as an initial step. It doesn’t even require artificial intelligence. Cropping, rotation, and then denoise/sharpen/resize functions in the appropriate order (determined by me as needed). And of course, the respective UI should be simple and clear.

I can easily make changes to contrast, brightness, color shades, etc., etc. in another software — TPAI doesn’t have to be able to do everything. I chose it precisely because of Sharpen and Denoise (often a blown-up crop via Gigapixel), but before applying them I usually need to “geometrically” edit the original photo, which I will then edit with various more complex tools.

Just started using the crop tool as I process old photos that have white borders on them. it would be useful to have a rotate function along with the crop tool to straighten horizens.

there should be leveling tool and a rotation tool in Photo Ai

Agreed: they (level and rotate) should probably be part of the crop tool which is currently implemented.

I would like a feature that automatically levels the horizon to straighten pictures out. GoPros and 360 cams can do this and it would be nice to add this feature here. Also in the cropping options it would be good to add a way to manually rotate and adjust the photos to be level.

Thanks for this suggestion. The reason why we haven’t built this thus far is because most other image editing apps have this functionality and a good portion of our users use Photo AI as a plugin to those host editors. I can see how this would be a useful built-in feature though.

Thanks Tim. I’m newer to buying software for photography. I bought this program because I was less than a new lens and could improve existing photos. I’d prefer a standalone package that doesn’t require me to buy into other platforms. That said I know most people, it seems, already have other softwares before purchasing this one.

Thanks for sharing. With that said, we can definitely look into a straightening feature.

I would like this too. I do not use photoshop or the like and do nor really want to either. Could this be part of the Crop as it is in Topaz Gigapixel.

Provide a dimension area so we know what sizes we’re cropping to.

This should be in pixels, pica, inches, mm, etc. Should probably include guides or matrix rulers.

Send an ordinary RAW image to Photo AI from Lightroom. In Photo AI I want to crop the image to get rid of the unneeded areas. But, my image is crooked (not that I EVER actually TAKE an image that isn’t straight!), and I need to straighten it.
I don’t SEE the place in Photo AI where I can rotate the image to straighten it. Am I missing this or is there no way to straighten?

The other thing I’m not seeing is the actual pixel values for the image size when I crop. I want to be sure I keep at LEAST as many pixels as I’ll need for the largest print I’m likely to make, but all I see when cropping is the ratio. Am I missing this or is there nowhere that shows the actual cropped image dimensions in pixels?

To straighten and image, with the crop tool selected, choose the “Straighten” tool in the toolbar and click on the Spirit Level icon. That will activate the tool on your image. Then simply select a starting point and hold the mouse button down and drag along the plane you want straightened. The tool will also display the angle in degrees that it will use to straighten the image. As for actual pixel values, holding down the mouse button while you drag on the white handles will display the number of pixels. Either the horizontal or vertical size, while cropping in that direction, or both values while dragging on a corner handle.

Could you point out the features you are talking about with screenshots … meanwhile here is the user guide to cropping …

Note, don’t answer questions when you don’t know.

Dooh! I was thinking Photoshop!

Yup, I found all that. What I haven’t found is how to straighten the image I’m cropping and see the crop size in pixels. Am I missing it, or did Topaz put in a crop tool with no way to st straighten or see what you’re cropping to?
