In the Sharpening section, it defaults to sharpen “All”, instead of “Subject”. Then when I choose “Subject”, it doesn’t highlight what the subject is. I’m using Windows 11.
Are you saying the default Sharpening you set within the Preference Menu has changed from auto select Subject to auto select All
In which case, simply goto the Preferences Menu under the Autopilot Section select Sharpening and reset the default to Subject from the the Default Selection drop down menu list and click save
Another possibility might be, sometimes if the image is very busy with more than one possible subject then the Auto Selection will get confused as to what the main subject is.
You may know which subject to choose however, if your subject is to one side or surrounded by other possible candidates then yes the AI will misintuperat the scene and it’s chosen subject or object will be different.
In which case, click on the Auto Selection drop down list and pick Custom or better still click on the Edit Selection Tab next to the Controls Tab in any case you’ll end up with the same Edit Selection controls.
Under the Brush Settings part you’ll see Type and a drop down menu make sure to pick Object Selection and the Paint / Erase is on the plus + symbol
As you hover over the image with your pen or mouse different parts of the image will be highlighted in red a Rubylith type mask, when you’re ready hover over the area you want to select and click that area to select it
Tip: if you accidentally click on the wrong area simply Press Control / Command Z to undo or Press down on the Alt / Option Key which will temporarily turn your Plus icon into a Minus one and simply deselect the area you don’t want
These keyboard shortcuts work for the Selection Brushes
Alternatively use the Paint / Erase Plus and Minus Tabs for adding and removing the mask
It looks like it’s a combination of the two factors you suggested. I actually eventually figured it out last night after trying different photos. Thanks for your detailed response though, I really appreciate it!
