Education | Lightroom Classic Revert Back To Original To Re-edit File

How can I save a copy of an image that I processed in Photo AI for future adjustments before I export it to Lightroom Classic? Thank you so much.

Hi.

What you’re asking is currently impossible with Photo AI and within Lightroom

Basically you temporarily send your image to Photo AI, apply enhancements, then send your image back to Lightroom

You can however:

  1. Apply your adjustments within Lightroom

  2. Next right click on your image or thumbnail then select, Edit in from the menu and choose Edit in Adobe Photoshop 2025 to send your image to Photoshop alternatively, you can also, press Control / Command E to send your image to Photoshop

  3. Once you’ve in Photoshop press Control
/ Command J to Duplicate your Background Layer then, right click on the Layer and convert your Layer to a Smart Object

  4. With your Smart Object selected goto the Filter Menu > Topaz Labs > Topaz Photo AI.

((Be aware with this method you’ll be able to apply all Enhancements except you won’t be able to Upscale your image.

Because, you’re accessing Photo AI from the Filter Menu and Upscaling isn’t allowed

If you want to Upscale your image then goto the File > Automate > Topaz Photo AI

However, when you do this Photo AI will save your Enhancements onto a separate Rasterized Layer))

  1. After you’ve applied your Enhancements within Photo AI then, click on the Export back to Photoshop button

  2. Finally Close your image to save it back to Lightroom

Now in future you’ll be able to open your image at anytime Double Click on Topaz Photo AI in the list under the Smart Object

Topaz Photo AI will open with your previous settings in place

Disclaimer
Although Smart Objects work with Topaz Photo AI they are not officially supported by Topaz

Hope this helps

Thank you for your response. I understand. The reason for my question might best be clarified by an example. I sent an image to Photo AI for denoise & sharpening. After I exported it back to Lightroom, I realized that the image was over-sharpened. It would have been convenient to return to the image stored in Photo AI & use the sliders to reduce the amount of sharpening.

Thank you. Kit

Unfortunately Kit what you’re asking is currently impossible at this time there’s, no option to take the images back to Photo AI and alter your previous settings

That’s because, you’re using Photo AI as a Lightroom Plug-in

The only way of doing that is to convert your image to a Smart Object in Photoshop as mentioned in my previous reply or use Photo AI as a standalone application allow me to explain further.

Photo AI as a standalone application:

  1. After applying your Enhancements click on Export Image

  2. Change or leave the Export Settings as you like for saving your image and click on Save

  3. After Photo AI has processed and saved your image you’re left with two options Close Window and Export Again,

((Export Again gives you the opportunity to add a prefix suffix change the location folder or file type.

Basically, Export Again allows you to save a second copy somewhere else))

((Close Window on the other hand, gives you the opportunity to go back into Photo AI make any changes, fine adjustments if you like to your image then Export another version of the image

Basically, Close Window allows you to create multiple instances of the same image with different settings))

  1. Click on Close Window make any changes adjustments then, click on Export and Save a new version of your image

You mentioned you used Denoise and Sharpening however, in your other post

you mentioned you used Super Focus as well are we talking about the same image or a different one.

I’ll, go on the assumption we’ll talking about the same image

Super Focus should only be used on images by it’s self and as it’s name implies it is for Super Blurry Photographs and as such will add a high level of sharpening and denoising to an image.

Denoise as you know removes noise from an image however, noise is part of the original image structure therefore, even with AI by removing the noise you’re reducing the sharpness of the image hence, the reason why Topaz adds a Minor Deblur slider to the Denoise Panel.

Likewise, Topaz adds a Minor Denoiseing slider to the Sharpening Panel

On top of all that, you mentioned you applied Sharpening as well

Applying all three of these to a single image is going to result in poor definition especially on faces

Unfortunately it’s a case of starting over

this will only be for the standalone version (the session saving) not when used as a plugin. This will only save the last session!
