Closing windows on a Mac

Why, on a Mac, does it take three and sometimes even four clicks to close a window? After I save an image the red “Cancel Processing” button changes to the blue “Close Window” button. I click this and it returns to “Save Image,” which has already been done. Since this odd behavior has persisted since the beginning, I know that if I click on the disclosure arrow to the lower left, next to the “Preview Updated” notice, it will open a thumbnail with a 3-dot menu button which finally reveals a working “close” option. In the meantime the program is reprocessing the already processed and saved image. What am I missing?

I have been having the same problem with the save process and having to force quit the program.

Thanks. At least I’m not the only one who thinks this process is nuts. I also find it more efficient to simply quit and relaunch.
